Tonsilitis spots making me sick?!

Tonsilitis started Saturday eve/Sunday, started as a bit of a sore throat that progressively got worse, now I'm no longer feeling pain but just cannot swallow because all I can feel are all the spots in my throat and its making me gag/be sick every time. Out of hours gp gave me antibiotics in tablet form on Sunday despite me explaining about the gagging. I crushed them in ice cream and it ended with my body violently trying to bring it all back up. I haven't been able to drink anything since Saturday evening. Phoned 111 this evening and she seemed to not really understand what the problem was and just offered to make me a gp appointment for the morning. What I'm wondering is has anyone else had tonsilitis like this, and what ended up happening? Because no health care professional I've spoken to seems to get it that I physically cannot get anything in. I should add the gp did check for quincy the other day and said there was plenty of room between my tonsils, and I have been keeping an eye on it myself and there is still a reasonable sized gap. Plus I feel actually OK in myself just exhausted, but no temp anymore.

It’s pretty normal for tonsillitis to cause severe pain and the inability to swallow anything (at least for me)

things that help me
gargle with warm salt water
popsicles, lots of popsicles

Try drinking a warm not hot Vimto or black currant.m with a straw.

Have you tried Difflam (or equivalent) spray? It’s been a game changer for me when my throat has been so sore/swollen that I’ve not been able to swallow tablets. The other option is to discuss alternative forms of the antibiotics such as suspension - though there’s a massive shortage of penicillin v at the moment due to increased cases of strep A/scarlet fever in children.

This is the problem trying to get literally anything down (including saliva) just results in uncontrollable gagging/being sick. Even though there is room for it to go down, it's the sensation on the spots. I hadn't thought to try a difflam type thing though, maybe that would be worth a go!

I'd crush the tablets, mix with 5mlish water and use an oral syringe to get the fluid between your tonsils so it doesn't touch? You'll obviously need to ensure you get 100% of the dose so might be fiddly, if you can hack it though you should start to feel better very quickly.

If you literally aren't able to drink then you need to have a drip otherwise you will die, that way they can get antibiotics into you too. Hospital?

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 24/01/2023 18:19

How are you getting on today @Helpdehydration? I hope you’ve found a way to take the antibiotics without bringing them back up again.

Thanks everyone, I think hospital would've been sensible given I could literally get nothing in me at all but the lady from 111 i spoke me made me really doubt this. @LovedFedAndNoonesDead thankyou, luckily it's slowly improving, and I've found this morning fizzy drinks are an absolute lifesaver because they take away the sensation from the spots that makes me sick, so if I drink water I can still feel them but the fizz seems to completely cover it up. This is after 3 days of literally nothing to drink at all but I'm still here and improving which is the main thing 😁

Bless you. Am glad it’s beginning to ease and you’re getting fluids and, more
importantly, medications in.

In future, if you are so unwell you can’t drink,
take medications or swallow your own saliva, don’t hesitate to go to A&E - while 111 will make you feel bad for troubling the hospital for ‘a sore throat’, getting dehydrated because you can’t drink and not being able to take essential medications (and antibiotics are essential if you’ve been diagnosed with bacterial tonsilitis) need urgent treatment as, if dealt with appropriately and promptly, it would likely prevent admission down the line.

Have you tried gargling with dissolvable Paracetamol or Aspirin?
I used to have to do this a lot before i eventually ended up having them out 🙏

superplumb · 25/01/2023 17:28

I went through a stage in my 20s of getting it very regularly. I felt sick and was almost sick a few times. Fldefinitly get throat numb spray ans drink warm water. Room temp full fat coke helped the sickness. Ask for liquid antibiotics if you can't swallow tablets. But keep drinking liquid and soups.

Mysterian · 25/01/2023 18:04

I get tonsil problems a lot. chloraseptic spray works well. Disgusting but numbs everything. Cold and 'slimy' is good. I recommend Frijj milkshakes, and for a hot option white chocolate Options drink.

Chocolate is right out. 🙁

You might need to go to hospital. My dd spent three days in hospital with severe tonsillitis. Please seek more medical help.

Warspite · 25/01/2023 18:20

I’ve had a dreadful dreadful swollen throat for well over a week. Glands the size of golf balls but Difflam gargle wasn’t terribly helpful.
I went back to gargling with TCP which has Phenol in it. In my experience Phenol numbs the throat and was such a relief. Much better now & improving.

I had this too in the summer. Kept throwing up Antibiotics. Really thought if me I go to hospital to have an iv. GP gave me anti sick tablets. After 24 hours of antibiotics the vomiting stopped thankfully.
it was awful. You have my sympathy!
