Need help, I’m panicking!

Ok, so I’ve been ridiculously stupid (as the username would suggest)

This morning on route to work, I went through a red light. It was a complete mistake on my part, it was dark and foggy, as I approached the lights, the green to turn right was lit but I stupidly thought it was for straight on. There are no red light cameras in my area, I’ve searched high and low on the internet. However there is a traffic camera a little further down the road that updates traffic flow online- I assume for people to check how busy it is.

My question is, should I prepare myself for a fine and points? Please don’t berate me, I’ve never felt like such a careless idiot in all my life and couldn’t be kicking myself any more than I am.

It was an accident and nobody was hurt- honestly don’t worry. In all likelihood you’ll never hear anything about it. There is no point in worrying about it now-what’s done is done. Cross that bridge if you come to it.

HTruffle · 23/01/2023 21:47

I’m not an expert but I’d have thought it would have to be a specific camera on top of the lights to catch people jumping a red, they wouldn’t have the time or resources to check the footage from a different camera that just happened to pick up the area if you see what I mean.

TheChosenTwo · 23/01/2023 21:47

Well prepare for a fine and points (although not sure what that would look like physically!) and if it doesn’t come that’s a bonus?
You won’t do it again I’m sure. Mistakes happen on the road thousands of times a day, be thankful yours didn’t cause any accidents to yourself or others. If you do receive a fine and points then it’s a just consequence but if you didn’t then count your lucky stars.

Well you can't go back and undo it so there's absolutely no point panicking over it.

If there are no red light cameras in your area you'll probably be fine. Just consider yourself lucky that you didn't kill yourself or someone else.

Hellocatshome · 23/01/2023 21:49

Its very very unlikely anything will happen.

I know. I had to pull over not long after as I was shaking at my stupidity. I’ve never been so bloody careless when driving. I’m just beyond thankful I didn’t cause an accident. I drove home with my eyes absolutely glued to every traffic light I approached.

Try not to overthink it.
I was at a traffic light controlled roundabout the other day- the driver next to me (we were at the front) was watching the wrong set of traffic lights.

I’m never not shocked by how terrified of wrong-doing some people are on here, living with the genuinely belief that a phenomenally minor accidental indiscretion will have SWAT teams swinging in through the windows to remove your liberty.

BunchHarman · 23/01/2023 22:14

I was shaking at my stupidity

You drove through a red light. That’s it. Why were you shaking? It’s irrationally fearful.

If it makes you feel better, in an empty road at night, I will deliberately go through red lights because it’s pointless sitting there at them when there’s nothing there.

Extendivecover · 23/01/2023 22:16

You are massively overreacting

WonderingWanda · 23/01/2023 22:17

I think you need to calm down a bit. It was a mistake but no one was hurt. The worst that will happen is a fine and some points and you will be more careful moving forward.

Ivebeenstupid13 · 23/01/2023 22:20

I know, I probably am overreacting. I drive for a living, basically, so just really don’t want the points. But if it comes to that, it comes to that. Just wish I could stop my mind thinking about it!
