"Derek" Ricky Gervais

Cried my eyes out and laughed my arse off all the way through it. The fitting and emotional background music, all the unbelievably sweet old residents who I just want to wrap my arms around, the animals, the relationship with Hannah and Tom, the Dad scene with Fix You in the background (ugly sobbed at that one), the way Vicky grows into such a lovely young woman, the scene where you see old videos of when the residents were younger, the kindness, everyone just caring about each other. Love Kev and his vile humour, the headbutt scene, Douglas telling that horrible cow to fuck off. The whole thing is just so cozy and makes me want to get into bed with a warm cup of tea 😊 love RG... he just gets me x

100% agree

Mammyloveswine · 22/01/2023 22:19

It's great!

For all he pretends to be uncaring I love Ricky Gervais!

Ive just started watching "afterlife" again following the death of my mam...it's very relatable.

dangbongo · 22/01/2023 22:28

It's the one thing he's done that I couldn't get on with. Kerry Godliman is brilliant, but his character just made me feel uncomfortable. I adore Afterlife, the Office and Extras. Maybe I should give Derek another go...

It is litrally the best. RG is a genius

vinoandbrie · 22/01/2023 22:44

I loved this and watched it during lockdown, I cried and cried. I’d never watched any RG before, I’d just assumed he was not for me. Well, he is, as I love AfterLife too!

Everybodywants · 22/01/2023 22:45

Yes it's amazing plus Brett Goldstein needs to be the man in my life please

ComeOnThenFanny · 22/01/2023 22:45

It's absolute genius. In my top ten TV shows of all time.

UWhatNow · 22/01/2023 22:52

I’m with you on RG’s writing, casting and the pathos he is able to engender. I’m a fan of everything he’s done except for the character of Derek itself. It was a bit much for me and not a plausible situation at all. It didn’t put me off watching but it did take away from what was an otherwise brilliant series.

KateBalesCardi · 22/01/2023 22:57

It's genius isn't it, I was late to RG (hated The Office and it put me off watching any of his other stuff) but Derek and Afterlife are two of the best things I've ever watched. That mix of funny and utterly heartwrenching is a special thing and RG is the master of it. That scene with Derek's dad after the funeral still makes me sob every time and I must have seen it 20 times Blush

karmalama · 22/01/2023 22:59

I binge watched this over a couple of weeks when Dh was away and went to bed with wet cheeks every night having sat silently sobbing . Wondered why I was putting myself through it ! But it's so good .

Wiccan · 22/01/2023 23:04

Love everything that RG has done including Seona Dancing had posters on my wall in the 80s

CherryogDog · 22/01/2023 23:07

I watched this last year and still cry buckets thinking about the episode where the dog dies.
