Talk me through part exchanging a car

Hi I've only owned 1 car and it's nearing the end of its life. Its a 2008 hatchback so nothing luxurious. I'm thinking of getting a slightly newer model.

If I saw one I liked , would I just say to the dealer I'm interested in part exchange- then they would knock some ££ off the new car?? Would they come up with a price or would they ask me what I want?

I'm completely lacking in confidence when it comes to cars.

Take your existing car to the dealer. They'll give you a part-exchange value. It may vary depending on the car you want to buy. If you agree then they'll sort and when you collect new car they'll take keys and logbook for PX car.

You might find you'll get more by selling it yourself. I sold a previous car to Evans Halshaw. They do a similar service to WBAC but EH gave me more.

Sorry, sent too soon.

Example - Car you want is £10000, PX value is £1000. You pay £9000 and dealer takes your old car.

Depending on the car and also the state of it, listing it on Facebook marketplace or autotrader etc
may fetch you more money. I have a 2008 Renault, part ex at 3 garages was around £300 but I could get between £1000-£1500 if I sold myself. But yes the way you explain would work. Just make sure you know the worth of your car. I’m planning to private sell mine, will cover the deposit, insurance and probably tax
