How does Bail work in the USA?

Can someone explain how bail works?

So if you're bailed, say on 50k, do you get the money back? When do you get it back and is it the whole amount?

What is the purpose of bail? To manage risk of you absconding?

Bail is a refundable deposit that allows the defendant to get out of jail until their court date. The deposit is used as collateral to ensure the defendant will return to court for trial or any applicable court proceedings. Not all cases will be given the option for bail.

If you don't have the money to pay the bail bond yourself then a bondsman will need to be asked for. If you don't show up for court etc then it's in their interests to hunt you down and turn you in. Basically it's like a deposit or loan

So must be many bondsmen who charge way extra so people pay them back etc as some must run

Fascinating system.
