Where shall I go in August?

I've got two weeks off work in August and would like to go away somewhere that isn't too hot, too overpriced or massively crowded...is it possible?! Does anywhere avoid the summer holidays madness?

I'm not really a beach person, love lakes and mountains or anywhere that's interesting/a bit different.

Bit difficult to answer if we don't know if it is just you, or with others?

NuffSaidSam · 22/01/2023 15:05

Possibly just me, possibly with other adults. No children coming.

No-one? Not a single place that avoids the holiday crowds in August...I knew it was asking too much!

Do you want to go abroad?

careermumofone · 22/01/2023 19:41

West of Ireland? The wild Atlantic Way is beautiful but not too crowded or hot. Or the Alps has beautiful walking/scenery and not too hot.

Sweetpea1989 · 22/01/2023 19:43

Scottish highlands? I'm sure you could find a quiet spot off the beat and track.

picklesandtea · 22/01/2023 19:44

Finland! Never crowded, won't be too hot, stunning lakes and scenery

Happy to go anywhere that fits the requirements. I live in London, so not there but will consider literally anywhere else.

Switzerland Austria

I went to Vancouver and Alaska in August, was the perfect time to go.

Dontslipontheice · 22/01/2023 19:49

A less touristy part of France? Maybe somewhere like the Limousin. Correze is great, it'll be hot but hopefully not too hot, stunningly beautiful with mountains and lakes.

Or what about a ski resort? We've often done summer holidays in Switzerland.

FelicityFlops · 22/01/2023 19:54

Black Forest (although it does get hot)
Alsace
Burgundy
Greek Island
Italian Lakes
Scotland
Sri Lanka (not hot about 26 to 29°c) but rainy
Thailand
Channel Islands

Any village around Como lake ( apart from Bellagio), not overly crowded and not very hot , Comp lake is lovely

Some great suggestions, love the idea of Finland or Alaska! Places I would never of thought of for an August holiday.

I like the idea of Scotland or Ireland as well, but will they not be busy given it's school holidays there too?

I think Italy, Greece, Austria, Switzerland are all classic summer holiday destinations. Love them all, but surely they'll all be full/peak price in August? Maybe I need to look at less popular/touristy locations in Switzerland.

West coast of Ireland. Fly into Derry hire a car and do a tour. Donegal is stunning. Loads of mountains, nice walks and lakes. Definitely won't be hot, but we were there last year in august and it was stunning. We were in beaches and trails that were empty!

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/01/2023 20:14

Iceland?

We've been to Scotland a couple of times in August. Once via Edinburgh to Ellie, St Andrews and Pittenween. Edinburgh was busy but pretty quiet after that. Also been to Hopeman and Fraserburgh which was quiet. Been lucky with little rain both those times.

Also been to Loch Tay in May half term and it was 26 degrees! Scotland is stunning!
