Baby split gum - Advice please (pics)

My 1 year old fell from the sofa and landed face first. She now has a big split in her gum over one front tooth. Her tooth had only come out as far as the blue line but now you can see all of it. Will this heal by itself? Is there anything we should do about it?

Dentist here. There is nothing you need to do immediately. Soft food, pain relief if your DD seems in pain. The gum will heal by itself. Treat it as a wound so clean her other teeth and then gentle brushing in a few days.
Keep and eye on the tooth, the main issues are the nerve can die and the tooth goes dark, the tooth is normally left in place to hold the space even when this happens but if the tooth develops an infection it will need to come out. The other issue is the knock can push the baby tooth against the buried adult tooth and this can cause marking and damage but there is nothing you can do to change this. You simply wait for the grown up tooth to come through. This is not that common based on the number of babies and children that knock their teeth.
I would make sure if she doesn't have a dentist that you have her seen somewhere so you have somewhere to go if problems develop. This may need to be privately depending on where you live as NHS access is rubbish in most areas. If you have an NHS Dentist ask them if they'll see her too.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to this! We managed to get her to the dentist today and she said exactly what you said, almost word for word... Are you our dentist???

I'm not, no babies with trauma today. That would have been very strange if I had been.

This has happened to my baby a few days ago. I got her to the dentist straight away and they said very similar to what they said to you but she fell and got it again now it’s even worse I’m so worried it looks horrible.

Hi - my son has just gotten a similar injury. When it's mentioned the gum will heal by itself does that mean it'll cosmetically repair back over the tooth?

GrapefruitTsunami · 20/11/2023 20:25

Sorry to hear that the same has happened to your son. It is very scary when it happens but this is my little one now. Her tooth grew out just fine and she is completely back to normal. Hope this reassures you! (But of course it's best to get medical advice in person too if you can!)
