HSBC card scam?

Probably nothing, but I went to pay for my petrol tonight, it was £85. Attendant asked me which bank I was with. When I said HSBC, he told me I needed to put my pin in. I’ve always been able to tap for sums up to £100.

Ive never had this before anywhere and my friend said “Hope you haven’t had your card cloned?” I’m worrying now??

Is this normal?

Maybe there is just an issue with certain banks? It happens sometimes. He’s probably been working several hours and has been having the chip & pin fail all day for certain banks.

Different cards have different limits for contactless payments. I always chip and pin at a garage.

The fact he asked you which bank your with sounds like there's an issue with HSBC contact less payments. I wouldn't worry about it. I think your friends making quite a leap suggesting your card has been cloned

Phew. Thank you.

I've definitely used it for more than £85 before, but like you say, maybe the garage has just had issues with HSBC.

Will stop worrying now (and tell friend to stop being melodramatic 🤣)

Did you not try the contactles or ask why?

IloveJudgeJudy · 21/01/2023 21:06

I'd be wary. Please Check. Certain Petrol Stations near me have cloned cards/done dodgy stuff on a regular basis.
