age-appropriate reading for ESL learners

Hi everyone, I am on the lookout for age-appropriate reading material for a fairly keen pre-teen boy with English as a second language. It needs to be stuff that is age-appropriate in content but fairly easy in language, without too many UK cultural references, slang and languages jokes. I guess maybe readers for children with dyslexia might fit the bill? The holy grail would be a magazine we could subscribe to overseas. Any tips much appreciated.

Barrington stoke do books with a higher interest age than reading age. I got some for my goddaughter who is learning English.

Usborne young reader have some more factual books and classics. As does M&S kids Ladybird books.
A translation of a book he read when he was younger could also work.
