Northern Lights: advice on hotels

My DP and I are planning to go and see the Northern Lights in January or February 2024. We know you can never be guaranteed you'll see them but we are thinking that either Iceland or Norway should be our 'safest' bets.

If you've been, could you please recommend a nice hotel? Something comfortable, with character, but not €500 per night. We will be hiring a car so we'd prefer to be away from a big city. Thank you!

We liked the Hilton Reykjavik Nordica and just consulted apps and charts as to where we might see them and when and drove there of an evening. They were incredible.

Thanks Joey ;-)

But ideally we'd like to be away from cities...

Personally I would opt for a cruise, if you book fairly last minute they can be very cheap

A cruise of just a couple of nights? Around Iceland? That could work.

We stayed at Hotel Ranga. It was a while ok and I cant remember how long the drive was. Maybe about an hour from the capital. Its near Hella. The hot tubs were great as was the resteraunt with its huge class windows.

Spent 4 nights over Xmas in Abisko Sweden nearest airport Kiruna. It’s a micro climate so more chance of clear skys. Saw the lights 3/4 nights.
