Should I get rid of my landline?

I feel I don't use it... but its reassuring that its there if I lose my mobile...

Am I a dinosaur?

I've just ditched ours when upgrading our wifi.

Hadn't used our landline for ages. We changed internet provider two years ago and they gave us a deal with phone - but we didn't realise they'd changed our landline number! And we didn't notice for TWO YEARS because nobody phoned us on it. Only noticed when DH accidentally took my mobile one day and I used the house phone to call it to try to find it. Two years! 😄

So last week we ditched it.

We aren't fussed about having a landline but the last few times we've redone our broadband it's been more expensive to take out a deal without a phone line. Unless that's changed I can't see why in your situation (where you'd prefer to have it) you would give it up.

This is why we still theoretically have one.

Haven’t plugged a phone into it for years though as the only calls we got were scam ones at antisocial times.

A few people still have my number and it feels like a useful emergency number for the kids or anyone else that might call if my phone is off...

We only have it because the landline would be easier for our young children to use to call 999 if they had to.

BamBamBilla · 20/01/2023 13:20

Haven't had one for 20 years.

Pasadenadreaming · 20/01/2023 13:22

Literally only have it because it's part of my broadband deal. Can't even use it if the power goes as it's all going via the internet soon anyway! In the past I always thought it would be useful if we had a power cut and my mobile had run out of battery.

dutysuite · 20/01/2023 13:23

I was going to get rid of it recently but it came included in my upgrade package with no way to ditch it and it was cheaper to keep than not. I don’t ever use it so once I have to start paying for it again it’s going.

Ponderingwindow · 20/01/2023 13:23

at one point I realized it would be cheaper to add a house mobile than a landline. Ymmv depending on your plan and provider options.

Allschoolsareartschools · 20/01/2023 13:24

I'd get rid of ours, DH wants to keep it. I think he likes to use it for 'official' calls as there's less chance of getting cut off? He can be a bit of a dinosaur though!
The only people who ever call it are scammers or our elderly parents. MIL will simply NOT believe you can call a mobile from a landline...🙄

CatOnTheChair · 20/01/2023 13:26

We got rid if ours when we moved.
All 4 of us had mobiles by that point. No need for a 5th number.

LibertyLily · 20/01/2023 13:33

We haven't had one for five years. Haven't missed it at all, but I think if my - non-mobile-using - parents were still alive it might be a different matter.
