I've got a virus on my phone, what do I do?

When I use the Internet it goes to a fake Vodafone site that says I've won an iPhone.

DH Just left for the weekend and I am completely technologically illiterate.

How do I fix it please?

Switch off the phone completely, wait a couple minutes than restart the phone.
by switching it off, I do not mean put it into standby by mode - I mean power it complexly down. If you don’t know how to do that or cannot google it, then play a game on you phone until the battery runs out and powers itself down. Then recharge and restart the phone.

Isn't it going to the last website you used? Try going into google and searching for something, then close down and reopen your browser app.

If none of the above work go to settings and do a factory reset.

No, it's not a the real Vodafone website it says something weired like foxy154 in the URL.

But it's made to look like voda phone and says to enter my details to get my iPhone

I can't do a factory reset. I'll lose all my photos and numbers and stuff

Yes I realise it's a bollocks website, but try going to another website. Either open a new page or type in the url bit to get to a different page.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 20/01/2023 13:03

You don’t need to do a factory reset. You just need to reboot your phone so the built in security software ‘wakes up’ and does its job. This is a phishing scam after your bank details - it’s preying on peoples greed for a free phone. Usually picked up a when looking at news sites unfortunately.

IronCandle · 20/01/2023 13:06

Just close that tab and open a new one.

Wallawallakoala · 20/01/2023 13:08

I had this and it was more like a pop up not a virus. Can you clear your web history and see if that works or did for me

Wallawallakoala · 20/01/2023 13:08

Sometimes it resets your home page so just have a look in settings to see if it’s done that

ouch321 · 20/01/2023 13:09

Try

Restarting phone
Turning phone off completely and then back on
Clearing cookies and data history on your mobile internet app

Emmamoo89 · 20/01/2023 13:17

Restart your phone

amusedbush · 20/01/2023 13:34

Which website are you trying to access? I've seen the thing you're talking about as a pop-up; usually people will be repeatedly redirected to it from dodgy streaming sites or spammy advertising. It will just keep opening, making it very hard to navigate away from it or do anything else. If you close the internet app on your phone and then reopen it without closing the actual webpage in the app, it will continue to redirect you to that Vodafone scam.

What type of phone do you have? I'm happy to talk you through what you're trying to do, what you're seeing, and how to close it.

purplecorkheart · 20/01/2023 13:38

Is your phone android or apple?

I can't. Once it's open I can only shut the browser. It won't allow me to do anything

Sorry I know it's not the point of the thread, but please back up your photos and numbers. What would you do if you lost your phone?

Hope you get your issue sorted. I think it can be easily resolved using some of the PP suggestions
