Could I be scammed?

Selling something on Facebook, they live 3 hours away.

They said they would transfer either through the bank or PayPal. They could be 100% honest but I don’t know them so.

Definitely a scam

IamSmarticus · 19/01/2023 23:12

Why is it definitely a scam, what other way would payment be made? OP how are you getting the item to the person, are they collecting or are you posting?

Tamarindtree · 19/01/2023 23:13

They will say they have never received it and get their money back and you will be without the item.

ProductivePenny · 19/01/2023 23:16

They are paying for the label to have it shipped why EVRi

And they said they’d transfer the money before, either through bank transfer or PayPal. If someone sends money on PayPal through family and friends I’m not sure you can dispute it?

This is what I mean, I can’t say for sure it’s definitely a scam. They could be an honest person or not.

They said they send the money first so unsure if they could somehow claim it back.

Friends and family PayPal they can’t dispute. Bank transfer or regular PayPal they can report as a scam in which case the money can be recalled. We’ve travelled that distance for a quite rare item so I suppose it depends what you’re selling and how in demand it is. I’d be very aware of scams unfortunately. Likely they’d pay you, you’d post it, then they’d report it and get a refund anyway.

If PayPal friends and family they can't claim it back. Does sound unusual and I'd be inclined to say it def cld be a scam but maybe they can't find anyone selling it local to them.

Ask for the address to get a postage price. Then look up Facebook see if same item is available near them.

It’s a brand new item from IKEA, had it a year still packaged and still being sold and I’m selling for less than 75% less because I just want rid of it.

Buyers protection doesn’t cover friends and family so they wouldn’t be able to dispute that right?

Do people really post items to buyers on Facebook Market place? I’ve never heard of this.

Ask if they would be willing to purchase it from you on eBay instead- list it as a ‘buy it now’ item with a charge to cover delivery by registered post

They said they would send me the label which makes me lean more towards it’s a scam.

I did actually send someone something once and it was a lovely transaction and she was really happy happy with the purchase. But no the entire point is cash in hand.

This is a scam. If you give PayPal details you will receive a fake email purporting to be from Evri/paypal and asking for payment of insurance for shipping (I'm fuzzy on the exact details of how the scam works but it's something along these lines).

ProductivePenny · 19/01/2023 23:33

What if I said pay friends and family and I’ll do the label.

If they say no then it’s a scam.

Not sure about whether it's a scam or not but do you know that Ikea buy back used furniture and you can sometimes get a generous amount back? Worth checking out if you don't sell to this person
