Yoto player - how many cards should I buy to go with it (for a gift)?

Planning on getting my niece a Yoto for her birthday (she'll be 3) but I'm a bit taken aback by the price of the cards - how many cards do you recommend to make a meaningful start? I don't want it to be one of those gifts that end up costing her parents loads.

Any general Yoto thought also welcome! Should I get my niece a pair of headphones? Any strong opinions on mini v full size (I'm leaning mini)?

Thanks all!

We got DD one for her second birthday and got a starter pack to go with it (I think there was maybe 5 or 6 cards in it) that had a few different types of cards like stories, music and first words. It was a huge hit, she's now 3.5 and uses it every day, we got the original yoto as the mini wasn't quite out yet so can't really comment but I don't think I'd have gone for the mini if it was an option at the time as she doesn't really use it out and about it stays in her bedroom.

I’ve popped my referral clad above if you wanted to use it and get 10% off.

I LOVE Yoto.

I think re size if you think they will ever take it travelling then get a mini. I got the big one first as wanted the nightlight for my then 2 year old but then when we could travel again got the little one for plane journeys.

you don’t need to get too many cards to start off with as they tend to get obsessed with one for ages and listen to it forever and eventually change to the next one.

when mine was three he loved Winnie the Pooh card. Topsy and Tim and all the Julia Donaldson ones. Now at 4 loving all the fact type ones and the far away tree best.

there is a club you can join I think for £10? A month that you can get two cards (so one free pretty much) each month could look into doing that for awhile instead of buying loads upfront?

We love ours. We have the headphones and mini. She uses it for long car journeys especially or quiet weekends at home. Re cards, we started with one story card and 3 cards recorded by family members. They read stories, poems, or made up stories. She absolutely loves them, and family liked doing them, I'd really recommend getting some of the recording ones and doing her a book yourself. Also, bare in mind they get access to yoto radio and podcasts, so you don't need tons of cards to have content. We've gradually added to the collection now, but find she often goes over and over the same ones anyway, she just loves being able to control her own listening and settle with a story for a bit.

This is so helpful, thanks!

muma did you get the headphones from Yoto?

I might get a few cards to start with and a subscription to go with it if you can prepay...

We joined the club which is a subscription and let's the parents choose two per month for a year. There is a starter pack too which is about £10 for 5 cards that are ok. Also there is a lot of free material with the app but these are not card based. There is also an on-board kids radio and podcast that changes everyday.

The radio is good. Some of the songs do come up again over different days and so you get familiar with the tunes they play. The range in styles from jazz, rock, country, nursery rhymes, all aimed at kids but not generally not annoying

Yes we did. In fact, her grandparents got the headphones and travel case to accompany our present of the yoto itselfand cards.

LillyLeaf · 19/01/2023 23:27

I got the yoto, which came with the Gruffalno bundle, 6 stories from here....

I'm definitely going to get the bumper case thing too!

We have Yotos - they're brilliant.
I would get a mini and an adventure jacket is essential, too.
Headphones are optional at that age, I think - would be used if travelling but my two don't use their headphones at home.
Often it's good value to get a pack of cards with the Yoto, but the starter pack has some good cards but some that haven't really been used, so I would maybe get Julia Donaldson or another pack if there is a bundle offer.
I've got really into MYO (Make Your Own) cards but depends if the recipient (Well, their parent) would do it.
The Yoto comes with a welcome card which is also a MYO card.
If I were you I think I'd get a mini, adventure jacket, and club subscription for a few months so they can choose the cards they want.

We did the same for our niece at Christmas after it was possibly the best gift our DD got a few years ago. I got the starter pack of cards and we also recorded her some stories to include. Would very much recommend the monthly subscription too.

I've just remembered there's a toddler bundle (3+), can't find it on the Yoto website - must be out of stock - but other retailers have it:

PS You can use the code TeamKatzenworld for 12% off. So you can get the mini, jacket and toddler bundle for £85.33. (I don't work for them, honest! Just ordered from them once!)

My 4 year old has the mini. He absolutely loves it and listens to the podcast and uses it for sleep radio too.
we have the subscription as it works out so much cheaper and he loves choosing his two new stories every month.
The whole thing with the cards fits in a tiny ikea box and we take it away with us wherever we go.
we just use normal kid headphone nothing special and they work fine.

A small card holder is handy, too - something like this: amzn.eu/d/6eVmzTA

I know this is an old thread, but desperately looking for a yoto mini for my autistic son who became obsessed with a friends! Does anyone happen to have one for sale as they seem to be out of stock worldwide?

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 11/04/2024 18:55

i had an email today saying there has been an issue with them overheating so they have paused manufacturing them till it’s resolved.

You won't get hold of a new one (see link) but you might find one second hand on eBay or FB marketplace. There is a Yoto FB group, too, where people sometimes sell them.
