For a 6 year old?
Super mario bros U deluxe or Mario kart deluxe ?

I know they would probably enjoy both can only get one so just wondering which one people enjoy more.

Mario Kart. Definitely. At 8 my daughter found the other game frustratingly difficult after the first couple of levels.

Clymene · 18/01/2023 08:13

Mario kart is still fun if you're useless. Super Mario is quite hard

CJCreggsGoldfish · 18/01/2023 08:13

Mario Kart.

Mario Kart.

Super Mario games are beautiful and great fun, but are rock hard after the first few levels.

Pascha · 18/01/2023 08:17

Mario Kart. Even I can play it. Even my mum can play it. It's fun and simple to understand.

lightandshade · 18/01/2023 08:21

Pokémon snap

The 6 year old I'd be buying for is able to complete Luigi's mansion on their own so I think they enjoy challenging games.

I originally thought mario kart but does it get a bit boring just racing or is there other elements to it? Like challenges?

I liked the thought of multiplayer on Mario bros deluxe as they can help each other whereas Mario kart is competitive.

I would go for the super Mario.
As you say, the Kart racing is repetitive after a while.

Needmorelego · 18/01/2023 08:28

Mario Kart is great.
There's the regular races but you also can do games like you have to drive around collecting stars while avoiding the rival team stealing your stars. I am terrible at that because you aren't driving in a straight line so I end up crashing into the walls/barriers etc.
(At least I think that's on the Switch version - we have both Mario Kart on Switch and Wii)

ScrappyMoggy · 18/01/2023 08:29

My 6 year old has both and likes Mario Bros more (although does love Mario Kart). He has finished it several times playing through and DH has played the multiplayer with him too. It’s not that hard and as a game to play individually it’s probably more fun, Mario Kart he tends to only play with other people.

Mario kart definitely.

Luigis mansion is nothing like Super Mario. My youngest completed Luigis mansion at 5YO. He is 7 now and still struggles with that Super Mario Deluxe!

If you want an easier platform type game one of the Yoshi or Kirby ones might be better in my opinion.

7YO is also telling me that Super Mario Odyssey is good (he has completed it).

SpikeWithoutASoul · 18/01/2023 08:48

Agree Super Mario Odyssey is easier. It’s by far my daughter’s favourite game.

bellinisurge · 18/01/2023 08:51

Yoshi's crafted world.
My much more than 6 year old and my DH love it

Bananallamarama · 18/01/2023 09:17

Is it a switch or a switch lite?

if it’s a switch and you can multi player then go for the platformer, because one of you can help if he gets stuck.

Otherwise I’d go for Mario kart. Which is still a lot of fun in multiplayer.

(I have both, and I have Luigi’s mansion but I didn’t really like it)

MyrtleTheTurtleQueen · 18/01/2023 09:20

If they like luigis mansion id go for super mario not mario kart. My 5 year old has no problem playing super mario. 3d land is a good game as well.

MyrtleTheTurtleQueen · 18/01/2023 09:20

Odyssey is good and varied.

Thereisnolight · 18/01/2023 09:22

my DC love the platform games. Not so much the 3D which are a bit style over substance.

Thereisnolight · 18/01/2023 09:23

They LOVED Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. The graphics and music are excellent.

Odyssey is good and varied.

Is this suitable for 2 players?

I was also going to suggest SM Odyssey if they liked Luigi's Mansion.

Yes, there is a 2 player mode, a bit like LM where the 2nd player is in a supporting role. In Odyssey, player 2 is "Cappy" and helps Mario out with some of the battles and other bits and bobs.

Feeling really thick now that 5 and 6 yr olds completed LM. My DS9 and I haven't yet completed it and have had to look up clues online for some of the levels 🙁

Mumof1andacat · 18/01/2023 09:53

Mario kart is a great multi player. Ds can't under why I'm good at. I have 20yrs practice on him having grew up with it on the snes!

katewitch · 18/01/2023 09:58

I would say Mario Kart. I also think Yoshi's Crafted World is great, I as an adult find it hard to 100% the levels but DS can still finish them and progress through the game. 2 player mode is good too, they can jump on each other and other things they'll find hilarious.

We also love Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, it's turn based strategy but also has co-op and versus battle modes for 2 players. DS and DH have got many many hours of fun out of it! We got is on sale for £9 and it's more than paid for itself!

queenofthewild · 18/01/2023 11:12

Chucking Captain Toad into the mix too. A great puzzle game.

Kpo58 · 18/01/2023 11:42

Kirby Star Allies is a good first platformer and you can gain allies in the game that help fight alongside you (which is great for young kids).

Disydoll12 · 18/01/2023 12:53

I also say super Mario Odyssey. Similar enough to luigis mansion. Massive hit in our house.
