Huge filling that suddenly started hurting..

Had a large filling done back in June. Dentist was sceptical that the tooth would survive long term but gave it a go. Over the last 6 months I've had a few flare ups of pain if I ate hot/cold food or something hard like nuts which seemed to irritate the nerve but generally everything seemed ok. Sadly last few days I've had awful pain from it. Brufen works for a few hours but it comes back. I'm cleaning my teeth, rinsing with mouthwash etc I've got an emergency appointment with dentist this afternoon but wondering what he can do in limited time. Starting to think the tooth has to come out and that's causing a whole lot of different worries ! Could it be an abcess or a hole in the filling ?

Sounds like the tooth may be weakened by the sheer size of the filling and you may have a crack that isn’t visible to you and that’s where the pain is due to sensitivity to nerve.

Rinse with salt water until you can see a dentist.

I found it cheaper at my dentist to go as an emergency where they have to do something than it is to book an appointment where they can just assess but not actually do anything and they book you in for an appointment which costs again where they will actually do some work.

@Tamarindtree thanks for that. Yes could well be a crack.
