Does anyone else prefer to watch the film/show before reading the book?

I prefer watching the adaptation first because there's always more information in the book so the universe expands for me, whereas reading the book first means that it shrinks after doing so.

Which do you prefer?

But if you watch the film and then read the book does that not influence how you imagine the world when you're reading it? Like seeing the actors faces, hearing their voices etc.

I don't have too much trouble with that probably because I don't generally picture the whole thing in such detail though I can understand why others would struggle with it.

I prefer watching the film first when the book is long and difficult to get in to. I find the film helps me to bond with the characters which then encourages me to continue with the book.

no the book is first for me, the film can only be an approximation of the book. they never get everything in. I like to form the characters in my head.
one example of spot on casting was having read all the Slow Horses books, to see the Apple TV version was glorious. absolutely on the money, husband agreed

Judgyjudgy · 15/01/2023 20:24

Noooooo! Always the other way around, because the book is always much better plus I like to see what someone else imagined and if it was the same as me

Stevie6 · 15/01/2023 20:39

Always the book first, but the film/program ALWAYS disappoints me

BertieBotts · 15/01/2023 21:26

The book first! I don't want to spoil the ending!

BertieBotts · 15/01/2023 21:28

Well actually - original format first I think. If there's a TV show and spin off books then you have to watch the programme first. Like kids books based off films or TV shows are crap usually.

Most films based off books are rubbish and the emotional moments are nowhere near as impactful. I like to feel the full impact of them by experiencing them as the original author intended.

Summersolargirl · 15/01/2023 21:32

Always the original format first or you’re watching someone else’s interpretation

NeuroWasabi · 15/01/2023 21:48

Book first for me, too! I don't want the book ruined by the film. The book is almost always better IMO.

XenoBitch · 15/01/2023 21:57

I had never head of Game of Thrones until the series came out. But then I have read some books that have later been adapted into series/film.
Reminds of some stuck up cock of an ex friend who sneered that I had not heard of or read Game of Thrones in book form. He offered to lend me his copy, and it had Sean Bean on the cover Grin

SpikeGilesSandwich · 15/01/2023 22:13

Definitely book first for me, far more detail, sub plot and character development in books usually. There's only so much can put into a standard length film. Plus, the acting is better in my imagination!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/01/2023 22:15

Always the book first. But then yes, I watch comparing to the picture I'd put in my head.

The only film I prefered to the book is Stardust.
