Sat here with cold hands thinking about how much I miss Ribena

Do you think they will ever bring the sugar one back?

It's just so lovely when you have a bit of a cold and need a hot drink

Tea is always nice but there are times when only Ribena would do

I buy the Aldi, Blackcurrant, the sugar version, gold cap, lovely hot in the winter.

ohidoliketobe · 15/01/2023 17:54

Vimto is a worthy second choice

Fuckingfuckssake · 15/01/2023 17:57

I frequently mourn Hot Ribena.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 15/01/2023 17:58

We buy Rocks Blackcurrant squash. It needs to be quite strong when drunk hot, but is the closest we've found in the supermarkets.

Stressybetty · 15/01/2023 18:00

I still drink hot ribena, did they reduce the sugar?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/01/2023 18:00

I stick up on Teissière Cassis sirop when we're in France for precisely this reason. The Monin blackcurrant syrup is more easily accessible in the UK and nearly as good 💐

Notthisnotthat · 15/01/2023 18:01

I miss proper Ribena too, but Rocks Blackcurrant is a pretty decent substitute.

EarthlyNightshade · 15/01/2023 18:03

Taking the sugar out of ribena was a crime against humanity.
I am watching here for a good alternative.

It has acesulfame K and sucralose in, as well as sugar.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 15/01/2023 18:04

Belvoir do a fancy blackcurrant cordial. Might be worth a try.

Inca22 · 15/01/2023 18:04

They still have proper Ribena! I drank it hot all over Christmas when I was sick.

Robertplantgoddess · 15/01/2023 18:04

Can you not just add sugar yourself? And what is in the regular ribena if not sugar?

no sweeteners in the Belvoir either.

bellac11 · 15/01/2023 18:05

Theyve ruined so many things. I found some hot chocolate pods today for the dulce gusto machine we have, but guess what, they have sweetners in them. Didnt buy them

I dont drink any squash drinks anymore because of this

Mogloveseggs · 15/01/2023 18:05

Belvoir blackcurrant and blueberry is a good substitute.

PerilousErection · 15/01/2023 18:06

I loved Ribena. I was even in the Ribenaberry Club. I ended up working for the company that made it and I got to spend a day in the factory watching it being made - as well as being able to buy it cheap in the staff shop. Dreams come true 😀

Now it just tastes shite.

purpleme12 · 15/01/2023 18:08

Why do they do that to things 😭

DelurkingAJ · 15/01/2023 18:08

I messaged them to bemoan the change and was told that in ‘extensive taste testing most people couldn’t distinguish the two’. Grrr…

Inca22 · 15/01/2023 18:04

They still have proper Ribena! I drank it hot all over Christmas when I was sick.

They added sweetners even to the 'normal' one to reduce the sugar in line with the sugar tax rules.

Can't bear Ribena. But there is Rocks and Belvoir blackcurrant if you want to give them a go. I thought Waitrose had full sugar squashes too?
I'm still not over San Pel putting sweeteners in their cans, I'm happy to drink diet, but they no longer taste the same.

Roselilly36 · 15/01/2023 18:19

Celeryfavour · 15/01/2023 18:03

It has acesulfame K and sucralose in, as well as sugar.

@Celeryfavour yes, indeed but the second Ingredient listed after blackcurrant juice from concentrate is sugar, the two ingredients you mentioned are listed last, not sure about the blue top sugar free version though. The gold top version is the only squash other than Vimto that I have found that contains mainly sugar.

HelloTreacle9 · 15/01/2023 18:22

I just had a hot Ribena! Not as good as the old high-sugar version, obvs, but then I quite like the taste of aspartame…

DadANDPK · 15/01/2023 18:32

I drink the blue one (I'm diabetic), mourning the original one. I thought I'd go a bit off piste & try the gold one for a treat. It's not the same as is used to be!! I'm a 70's child, I grew up on the stuff.

so disappointing 😪

redsky21 · 15/01/2023 18:35

Second the hot vimto suggestion

neverendinglauaundry · 15/01/2023 18:38

If you live near any polish shops, most of them sell different fruit syrups including blackcurrant syrup
