Can't stop coughing

I've been unwell for the last week and throughout have had a tickly cough (both dry and chesty at different times). It's gotten to the point now whereby it's scaring my 7 month old, not to mention waking him up through the night. I've tried cough medicine suitable for BF, the usual HLG tea, ibuprofen to try and ease the inflammation... nothing is making any difference. I have other stress going on at the moment and the cycle of having uncontrollable coughing fits, exhausting myself and causing a headache, and upsetting my son, I feel could legitimately tip me over the edge.

Please tell me someone has some suggested remedy.

Hot water with fresh lemon juice and honey is soothing. I have just come out of 2 weeks with an out of control cough.

Could it be asthma? Would a prescription for an inhaler help?

I have a similar cough and I find it's worst when I lie down to feed my son also. So I get a throat lozenge and have that ready for when I'm feeding him and try to prop myself up a bit so I'm not lying totally flat. I also do have an inhaler from my asthma previously and it really helps stop the cough. It's so rough though, hopefully it'll ease soon for you.

The only thing I know of to suppress a cough is night nurse. No idea if it's suitable for nursing though.

You may have a chest infection and need antibiotics.

I used to get this after every single cold.

Any other symptoms such as temperature, glands up? Steam might help but you need lots of it. Try 2 hot water bottles, one against your chest, one against your back ( lean back on pillows to lodge it in place. Helps to relax muscles. Hot water with lemon, frozen lemon slices will do or squeezy lemon if you don’t have fresh.

Pholcodeine linctus is a cough suppressant and is available over the counter. It's advised to only take it at night to stop that tickle.
You can't have it if you are breastfeeding though.

frostygarden · 15/01/2023 00:34

Soluble co-codomol or codeine is your friend!

PoochPalace · 15/01/2023 02:03

Depends what’s caused it but Robituson is an OTC cough suppressant that works v well.

Got to a walk-in centre or talk to a pharmacist tomorrow & if you should be checked for pneumonia or something similarly severe.

Let us know what they said?

BertaHoon · 15/01/2023 02:46

Another vote for codeine. That's why people used to get addicted to cough medicine.

Over the counter cocodamol.

Obviously if you're hacking up green phlegm then see a GP.

I'm not in the UK so can't give a brand. But I had a post Covid cough that was awful. I got a cough syrup that was designed for lingering coughs but had herbal ingredients - worked amazingly.

I've attached the ingredient list in case you can find something similar but Holland and Barrett have this one, which also seems herbal.
