Travel aid to help Mum get out of bed

Mindgone · 14/01/2023 16:13

My mum is 82 and has some mobility issues as well as Parkinson’s. At home she has a bar that’s attached to the side of the bed to help her get up in the morning. We are taking her abroad soon and she is worried about how she’ll manage to get out of bed. Could anyone recommend anything to help on our holiday please?

Contact local OT or look at Parkinsons UK website

We’re going to the Canaries, I’m not sure how to look into that.

Where are you going? There are equipment hire companies in other countries. I just looked one up in Spain for example.

See if there is a Facebook group for the place you’re visiting. I would be shocked if there wasn’t a hire place in the canaries.

Mindgone my DH has got Parkinsons and we had a bit of a crisis this week so I know a bit about it. He is getting a bed rail thing this week, handle in the shower and ? I think you can buy portable versions

Orchidflower1 · 14/01/2023 17:36

I say this kindly ( and as someone who has spent a couple of hours today looking at raised toilet seats for my DM) but does your mum want to go?

is she using the bed support as a way into a conversation about not feeling comfortable about going?

Assuming you’re flying from the Uk, it a fair length flight for an older person with mobility issues.

Obviously you know you’re dm best @Mindgone but just a thought.

If she def goes- Argos do suction grab handles for showers/ wet rooms which maybe useful to pack for the hotel.

Would this help OP.
Satin pyjamas/nightdress can also be helpful for moving/turning in bed

Davros · 14/01/2023 17:44

Orchardflower1 oh yes, I forgot about all the stuff Argos does, thanks for reminding me.

Lots of older people and people with mobility issues visit the Canaries and there are lots of places that rent mobility aids - Google, ask the hotel or your travel agent/rep for recommendations. Have a lovely time!

notprincehamlet · 14/01/2023 17:58

For example "Island Mobility Lanzarote - Mobility Scooter & Disability Equipment Hire" islandmobilitylanzarote.com

Theoldwrinkley · 14/01/2023 18:37

We went to specific 'disability friendly' hotel on Tenerife in 2018. They were next door to a mobility specialist, called 'Le-Ro' I think. There are other branches on other Islands but you'll be able to hire as the destination is very disability-friendly/aware. The hotel was Mar-y-Sol. Have a good time.

Thanks, I’ve ordered one from the Parkinson’s uk website.
it’s a tough disease to cope with, I hope you get the help you need. Mum was helped a lot by a home visit from an OT who arranged quite a few grab rails around the house. The service might depend on your location.
The Snoozle was recommended on MN a few years ago by a very helpful Parkinson’s nurse, and has been brilliant, Mum loves it and has recommended it to Parkinson’s friends who have found it very helpful.

Thank you very much for your kind message. Yes, she’s looking for to it, and her sister is coming too, so we’ll have fun. We’re going to Gran Canaria, and we’ve been to the same resort a few times before with Mum. She is recently worried about getting out of bed away from home, probably as she has aids at home to help. I’ve booked an adapted room at the hotel, so I’m hoping there will be sufficient grab rails there. Also a wheelchair at the airport, so we’ll happily skip the queues! 😉

Orchidflower the toilet seats aren't very reliable, the one we had slid about no matter how much you tightened it. We had a comfort height toilet installed instead, it was £300 for the toilet & installation, it only took just over an hour for the plumber to fit it & you can't tell that it has been done after the tiling & plumbing, nothing was damaged.

Nat6999 · 15/01/2023 00:20

Mindgone how much does the one she uses at home weigh? The one my dad had came in two pieces so if you wanted to take it with you it would fit in a suitcase if it wasn't too heavy.

The one she has at home is attached to a special bed, so can’t take it with us. I have high hopes for what I’ve ordered, and for when she visits here or anywhere else too. Thank you.
