Taxi drivers and seat belts. Are they exempt from wearing them?

Posting out of curiosity more than anything. I've only ever been in a taxi as a passenger maybe once or twice before.

however, DS 12 gets a taxi to school - he has autism amongst other issues. Taxi firm had a contract with our local authority.

I haven't really taken any notice whether this driver was wearing a belt or not.

DS told me today his driver never wears a seat belt and asked his driver why (DS is very inquisitive). Taxi driver said they don't have to. Is that correct?

ds said he was worried yesterday as a police car passed them and he thought that his taxi driver was going to get pulled over but didn't.

Taxi driver can do as he pleases of course. But I don't feel it's setting a good example to children with additional needs on the school run?

maybe I'm just thinking too much into it. I've never really been in a taxi more than once or twice so I'm not sure what the norm is!

Thank you. I've just googled myself. I guess it does make sense from a safety aspect on regular routes and jobs. But if I was a driver on school contracts I'd probably it wear on school runs but that's just my thoughts and I'm not a taxi driver!
