Anyone been to Hawaii? Looking for recommendations please!

I've always wanted to go to Hawaii - no particular reason other than pictures that I've seen look great and a couple of people that I know have gone have both loved it.

I've got 13 and 11 year old children and we are thinking of going for 2 weeks in the summer holidays.

A few questions - would you try and break up the journey with a couple of nights either side in somewhere like LA or San Francisco? Which island would you go to, or would you island hop whilst there? Any particular hotel or accommodation recommendations?

We have stayed in Maui but before we had children. We spent a week there and a week in California which was great as we got to do theme parks and shopping in California and then Maui was much quieter and calmer so we did more sunbathing and snorkelling and surfing, that sort of thing.

We did spend a day where we visited the other islands.

My advice would be two centres might work but don't put too much pressure on yourself by travelling too much.

Ooh I didn't think of doing a week in California and doing theme parks etc. I expect the kids would prefer that to 10 days in Hawaii and a few days here and there either side. Hmmm, back to the drawing board maybe!
