Having watched the show, I've usually those you cook with the 'safer' ingredients that seem. So for example, I often cook with blue cheese but it's one of those things that a lot of people dislike so I'd probably avoid it if cooking for guests I don't know.
My preference would be to cook a fish dish but would probably stick to the most common fish (cod, prawns, salmon) as again fish can divide people.
I'd jump around the world a bit for each
So maybe mini Thai fish cakes (using cod and prawns), no too much chilli with a simple ribbon salad and dressing.
Then I'd do a pasta dish, with linguine, nduja, a gorgeous roasted tomato, fennel and pepper sauce. A lemon and Parmesan crumb and homemade garlic dough balls. (I'd probably have to learn to make linguine though.)
Then for pud I'd make by legendary creme brûlée's with home made raspberry coulis and homemade ginger snaps.
Entertainments not my thing so I'd probably hire a local singer/musician or band!
