Hobbies for friends.

At an age and stage where I'd like to meet some new people in my area.

I'm still fairly young, but figured starting a new hobby might be an option, as I'm not massively sporty and don't have young DC anymore.

What hobbies/groups exist in your area that have been good for meeting people?

Watching for ideas. Over the last couple of years my 5 close friends have all one by one moved abroad so I’ve found myself without anyone local to spend time with. We’ve also recently moved area so a good time to try something new. We don’t have kids either so no opportunity to make mum friends.

It's not exactly a hobby but I found my local WRN group has been very good for meeting like minded women.

ShirleyValentin3 · 14/01/2023 19:23

Any other ideas? 👀

I didn't know what this was, but sounds very much like something I'd enjoy. Have been searching to see if I can find a group near me. Thanks 😊

Volunteering - I’ve made a lot of friends at the foodbank and a charity I’m involved with.
Walking and community gardening are bighere too. It seems to be a walk and chat around the park rather than rambling.

I went to a community hub type place and sat near people that were knitting. Now a bigger group go and do all sorts of crafts. Have made some new friends out of it too.

A spiritual development class (don't laugh - it's great fun and full of lovely people)
I could do with something arty or crafty. I love workshops

@ShirleyValentine3 Are you on Twitter? If you are, dm @WomensRightsNet and ask to be put in touch with your nearest group.

My friend goes to WI but she travels to it as our local one has an average age of about 85 (I went once!).

StormObelisk · 14/01/2023 20:23

I also went to the WI, once. I thought it was dreadful. Lots of Head Girl vibes and really cliquey. I also wasn't remotely interested in their chosen activity.

My sister made female & male friends at a Stand Up Paddleboarding group; also try the local Rowing Club as they will rope you in to work behind the bar too which is pretty social.

Then beach circuits attracted men & women.

Go to a gym at a regular time and join any classes you like. I always end up talking to someone.

I found this too. It was a new one set up in the small town where I live , so I went for a nosey. Average age was 85. The activity was bizarre and the ladies were not a friendly bunch. Such a shame.

I made very good friends other gym. But it’s the sort of gym which has a coffee lounge/members lounge where people go for coffee after classes which I think helped.

StaceySolomonSwash · 15/01/2023 11:42

I joined a craft club that was starting up. The original leader left but the rest of us are good friends and regularly socialise, pop in for coffee etc. Had the craft club not happened I was going to form a book club.

I tried WI and the Ladies Circle but they were very cliquey and unwelcoming (you can't sit there, that's Rosie's seat etc)

trimma · 15/01/2023 11:50

Not a hobby but I met new friends through my local Meetup group.
