Cotsworlds

Newyear2023 · 13/01/2023 22:52

Hi all
Looking to have a girly weekend in the Cotsworlds in a few weeks. Me and my friend are early 30s and single. Looking to have a mix of chilling, nice food and probably go out one night to a few bars and maybe a dance towards the end of the night. Any recommendations for what areas of Cotsworlds please? Thanks!!

Broadway is lovely and a few bars but might not be lively enough for you!

ReviewingTheSituation · 13/01/2023 23:02

Not many places in the Cotswolds for late night dancing! Cheltenham, or Bath... but then you may as well just go to a city you want to visit.

What is it about the Cotswolds specifically that makes you want to go there?

Mydogatemypurse · 13/01/2023 23:05

Avoid Cheltenham i felt very unsafe.
Tonnes of beautiful places but there wont be partying till late. Personally my favourite are bourton on the water and moreton in marsh

Newyear2023 · 13/01/2023 23:16

@ReviewingTheSituation really only because it's in the middle of where we both live!

I’m afraid all our towns are too little to offer what you’re looking for. Going a bit further south to Bath will be your best bet. Cotswolds is more country pubs, long walks and competitive Labrador owning.

Get yersen to Bristol instead!

Unsafe in Cheltenham? Confused

LdnReno · 13/01/2023 23:28

If you want a bit of nightlife then I'd head towards Cheltenham

Yeah, that surprised me too. Unless it’s race week, when the whole place becomes an alcohol fuelled maelstrom and is a bit discombobulating.

I have lived in lots of places including Cheltenham and I have only felt 'unsafe' during race week.

Cirencester could work. There are a few late bars at the weekend, and many of the pubs will do lock ins too.

ReviewingTheSituation · 13/01/2023 23:35

You need to decide if you want late night drinking and dancing, in which case Cheltenham or Bath (both on the very outskirts of the Cotswolds), or pretty villages/towns, lovely tea shops and nice pubs/restaurants, in which case anywhere in the actual Cotswolds (Stow, Burford, Moreton in Marsh, Broadway would be some of the main places).

If you're using public transport, it's not that handy to get to those places. If you're driving, it might take a while even if it looks like a good central point on the map. Where are you both coming from?

Unsafe in Cheltenham? Confused

Yes, took kids to the park, people smoking ballons and asking for money... generally off thier head. Lots of drug use in city centre. Bars on windows of air bnb. Local people advised not to use local taxi firms, said try not to show Northern accent too. Felt very very dicy walking round at night. We went home instead of going out for dinner. Very uncomfortable place and ive travelled and lived around the uk and the world. Only place i felt like 'something is going to happen'. We were meant to be there for a week and explore the county. We left after 2 nights. Incredibly unpleasant place.
Ive lived in bath, i suggest people go there. Its touristy but safe and very very nice. Amazing restaurants and villages on outskirts.
I still reflect on why i felt so scared given ive lived in Manchester... not always the nicest areas for most of my adult life. Very uncomfortable place

Not cotswolds but amazing welcoming place

Out partying in the Cotswolds! I think the Cotswolds is where the party people go to have their comedowns more than come ups.

There is a cute miniature village in Bourton on the Water though. Also a lovely tapestry shop in Burford.

lljkk · 14/01/2023 05:48

go to Oxford instead

borntobequiet · 14/01/2023 06:21

Birmingham might work for you. The Cotswolds, as others have pointed out, is not exactly party central. (Though I used to live opposite a North Cotswolds village hall and a couple of times in ten years I was disturbed by late night revellers.)

jenn88 · 14/01/2023 06:34

Shocked about the Cheltenham review and would have a say I disagree!
I agree Cirencester maybe suitable! Nice market buy day, some nice restaurants (cote, Henry's, fleece) bars, and one or two later opening 'club/bars'

CrabDuckDuckCrab · 14/01/2023 07:06

I live near Cheltenham, and have lived IN Cheltenham (and have a northern accent!) and, like most others here, have only ever felt unsafe during race week. Otherwise, I've always found it pretty pleasant - and I lived in one of the more characterful bits, let's put it that way. I certainly never had to hide my accent Confused and if I had done, it would've been from the snobby contingent of inhabitants, not the less privileged ones!

It was for the snobby people.

LlynTegid · 14/01/2023 07:53

I think OP the kind of weekend you are looking for would be difficult to find. You might want to consider Oxford.

Twiglets1 · 14/01/2023 08:16

Broadway is the nicest village (imo) nice restaurants and bars and shops - no clubs though for dancing.
