What's the oldest thing in your spice rack?

I like to keep an extensive range of herbs and spices in my kitchen.

Today I noticed that my caraway seeds are supposedly best before August 2016.

Whats the most out-of-date thing in your rack?

I recently threw away anything dated in the 90s!

Nutmeg but I grate it as I need it.

I had a clear out last week, funny enough caraway seeds Wink circa 2018.

I was cooking at my mums last summer and I found spices from the late 90’s Grin

We have some juniper berries in there which are probably 2 years old but they’re the oldest, we have a huge selection of spices (well I think it’s a big collection!) and they are used in vast amounts of dinners, we go through them quickly!

I have a jar of ground mace with a best before date for 1997. I'll actually be quite sad when we finally finish it...

I have some expensive saffron someone gave me at work and I left that job 15 years ago.

Cinnamon, 2009.

Cloves - Nov 2015. They still smell ok?!

Whole Nutmeg 2016

I have a little ornate pot of saffron that I bought the last time I went to Majorca. That would be about 1990 I think.

Beating that though, is the mixed spice. That has been around for so long that the use by date has worn off. My guess is that I bought it in the early 1980's.

I've got some whole spices which are several years old - nutmeg, star anise, cloves. They're still perfectly good. And a tiny glass jar for saffron, it's dated about 15 years ago but I'm sure I've refilled it a couple of times. Actually there are some whole vanilla pods that are pretty ancient but they're in the caster sugar - they're still good, I've refilled the sugar jar at least a dozen times & it's still so fragrant.
