Kindle advice

I never thought I would be interested in a kindle - love sitting curled up with a proper book however I have booked a week coach trip on my own and I know that on part of the journey or in the hotel room a kindle would be better. Just wondered if any one could recommend - sorry a bit ignorant I don’t need Wi-Fi do I - just someone where to charge - does charging them up last long. I was a bit overwhelmed when I looked at all the different sorts. Thank You

Charge can last weeks. You only need wifi to download books. Once you have done so you can read them without.

Digestive28 · 13/01/2023 16:25

No need for wi fi - you need an Amazon account and just download the books when you have WiFi (before you go). Charging lasts ages - you may be ok for a week, or maybe just charge once.
I love mine, so enjoy!

Thank you -

I highly recommend kindle paperwhite, you can read them in any light, so in the dark or on the beach in glaring sunlight and it’ll be the same. You only need Wi-Fi to download the books and like pp said the charge will last weeks even with heavy use. Definitely don’t need charging every day.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 13/01/2023 16:29

Oasis has a crap battery life. The paperwhite is has an awesome battery life - weeks even for a prolific reader!
reddit has a sun dedicated solely to kindles and all the info you could ask for.

spidereggs · 13/01/2023 16:29

Just had a wee look, I would go for the one that's in a deal today at 74.99.

All new kindle 2022 release.

Then a book type case.

If you have prime you can borrow books for free, ten at a time. Download before you go. Sorted.

I wouldn't be without mine now, and I'm a real proper book person.

BerthafromBolton · 13/01/2023 16:32

That’s great - will have a look….

Kindle paper white. Charge lasts me weeks.

BerthafromBolton · 13/01/2023 16:38

This was part of my New Years resolution - be more adventurous - hence booking coach trip ( going on my own ) and embracing technology! I wanted to sort out a kindle without the input of my adult sons - so thanks for all your suggestions,

It's SO easy and if you already have an Amazon account it does it all for you.

Duvetdweller · 13/01/2023 16:41

I have an oasis and the battery isn’t great in comparison to my old really basic one but I do like that it reacts to the light and changes accordingly. I also pay £7.99 for unlimited so you can ‘borrow’ books.

SausageInCider · 13/01/2023 16:45

That kindle for £75 isn’t a paperwhite - it does have a glare free screen and you can turn it onto dark mode so that might do you. According to reviews it’s smaller than the paperwhite

paperwhite is waterproof so you can read in the bath. That kindle 2022 also includes ads for 74.99 - if you don’t want ads it’s 84.99

Lejuge28 · 13/01/2023 16:45

What I would also recommend doing is add any books you fancy to a wish list on Amazon and then check it regularly ( I check daily) as Amazon have daily deals and I usually buy the books when they go down to 99p even if I don't need them right away, saves money in long run.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 13/01/2023 16:48

@Lejuge28 snap! I do that, plus I wait until I’ve bargain bought all the titles in a series before starting to read them.
@BerthafromBolton you won’t regret buying a kindle. - from a previously hardcore real bookworm.

BigFatLiar · 13/01/2023 16:50

Another thing to consider is getting a reader that supports audible (I think newer paperwhites do). If your sitting on a coach you can put on your earphones and listen to a book while looking at the scenery. You can get podcasts and short articles as well as books.

BerthafromBolton · 13/01/2023 16:51

I am looking at the paper white and I do have Amazon. Thanks again .

SoupDragon · 13/01/2023 16:54

On the subject of charging, if you're reading it a lot it might need charging more often but the battery life is really good.

I love my Paperwhite.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 13/01/2023 16:54

Another vote for the paperwhite. I love mine.

AnathemaPulsifer · 13/01/2023 17:09

I love my paperwhite but the basic kindle now has lights so I’d go for that.

AdaColeman · 13/01/2023 17:25

I love my Kindle, especially wonderful when travelling.

I keep mine in Airplane mode most of the time to conserve the battery charge, and only turn it off to download books.

Sign up for the Amazon Kindle Deal of the Day email to be notified of the 99 pence books each day, and get Kindle book sale information.

determinedtomakethiswork · 13/01/2023 17:28

I have an Amazon Fire and use my library to get free books. I've hardly paid for a book in years.

rosegoldwatcher · 13/01/2023 17:44

Mine is the older (2021) version of this one:

www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08N3TCP2F?ref=eink_dp_stripe_moo_uk

The 8GB one is £129.99 with ads and 3 months free Kindle Unlimited.
The battery life is brilliant. The 'ads' are just a book recommendation each time you switch it on. Not intrusive.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 13/01/2023 18:28

I also love my Paperwhite, though the battery life is nowhere near as good as my old keyboard Kindle.

Those of you who find the battery lasts for weeks, are you mostly keeping it on airplane mode?

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 13/01/2023 18:31

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool i only switch on the WiFi but if I want to download/ buy or return a book (use amazon prime library loan facility). So maybe 2-3 times a month for 5-10 mins whilst I have a quickie browse.

PAFMO · 13/01/2023 18:32

I've had mine since 2014 and it's still going like a train. I've got 1000s of books on it and it gets charged about once a fortnight/3 weeks.
