Cheap houses for sale on continent owned by Brits

Anyone else noticing adverts for cheap houses in France and Spain owned by British people? They are always in rural areas, so I assume French and Spanish people are not interested. I wonder if this is because it is much harder to retire abroad now? Or is there another reason? Just curious why this is happening.

may be expensive to run or the visa requirements mean its not worth living there. Used to be 180 day(?) now I think its 90 before you have to leave for a while unless you take up residency

Your total stay in the Schengen area must be no more than 90 days in every 180 days. It does not matter how many countries you visit. The 180-day period keeps ‘rolling’.

A possible brexit benefit but also costs are rising so people may be selling up

Taxes have risen in some cases too.
I am considering signing my half of our property in Spain over to my EU passport holding DH. If his passport didn’t allow me to spend more than 180 days there we would be selling it

I have relatives in rural France and there has always been a decent turnover of properties owned by Brits - and they have always been cheap relative to the UK. It is hard to know exactly what it is going to be like living there or even having a holiday house and inevitably some people decide it's not for them, or that they've had a good innings and want to try their luck elsewhere.
