Umbilical Stem Cells

My interest has been peaked by those companies offering to store umbilical cord with child’s stem cells to be used later in life to help with disease if so needed.

Has anyone done this? Or have any thoughts on this? It’s quite pricey and I’ll get round to doing my own research soon but interested to hear opinions and experiences.

I was mildly interested in it when I was pregnant but I think I wasn't giving birth in a participating hospital or something so gave up on the idea. In theory I think it's great, wonder what the storage costs are though?

I did some research when pregnant and came to the conclusion that delayed cord clamping was better. Then the child got the guaranteed benefit of more blood etc from birth. The chances of something going wrong enough to want stem cells are so small. All personal choice of course.

thank you for your responses :) will look into delayed cord clamping

the cord contains 1/3 of the baby’s total blood volume and needs it at birth and in the subsequent months, not later down the line at the point of some abstract idea of a disease that stem cells could help with

I donated mine.
