Conscious Bible Stories For Kids?

Hi there,

I am looking for bed night stories about the bible for my sons. They are four and five. I want to teach them about the old testament, but I am looking for a version that is more conscious. Which means a version in which for example Cain and Able don’t kill each other, instead working through their misunderstandings. I want to teach my boys compassion and loyalty.

What do you think about a kids’ books edition of the bible that has a more conscious approach? Do you know a copy like this? Would you buy the bible with a more modern, conscious perspective?

Thank you so much for your thoughts!

Anna

Well, kids bibles are your friend here

BUT if you’re looking for non-violent working through your problems, I’m not sure the OT is the book for you.

if you’ve got issues with Cain and Abel, don’t dig to closely into God’s commandment to Joshua at Jericho…

There are many reasons I would actively avoid such a book, we are believers, so mine would have known already that the stories had been altered. I’m guessing that aspect of it isn’t a concern for you. However there is cultural capital in bible stories that your children would miss if you were to read them another version. At work today, someone said to me ‘I need the wisdom of Solomon for this one’. That’s not a great example, but something to consider.

So you want a version of the bible that isn't the bible?
Good luck with that.

Like others have suggested, the New Testament would be better.

Yup, each Bible you read in English is copywrited for the publishers.

I think your utterly batshit tbh just get a normal children's bible and read it to them

The Jesus storybook Bible links events in the Old Testament to Jesus and helps make sense of it, making links. It would definitely be my recommendation. Also the Bible project videos when they are a bit older. Veggie tales are very American but combine bible retelling with other features, perfect for that age if you don't mind an American accent. There is also Buck Denver through the bible videos, also American.

Wonder how the OP wants to update Noah, the only tale of genocide and mass animal slaughter packaged as a nice kids story with a jolly song.Grin

I guess if you want an alternative more positive take on Adam, Eve and the serpent, when they're older they can read the Dark Materials trilogy.

Visit your local Christian bookshop. They will have a children's section and be able to advise.
