Has anyone seen this?

My boyfriend has told me he's watching it. I've not heard of it so looked it up to see if I might be interested.

I'm not. I'm really, really not.

According to Imdb it's full of sex, prostitutes and strippers. Because of my past I'm really sensitive to things like this. It's made me feel quite anxious and I think it's put me off him a bit.

I don't really know why he told me tbh.

But I do appreciate the considerate responses. Thank you

I think the reason I said I couldn’t remember the strip club setting is because it really isn’t part of the story, it’s just like a backdrop. It’s quite a feminist programme if that’s part of what’s worrying you - ie no exploitation / porn type stuff - it’s full of really strong female characters and the lead female actress is absolutely brilliant. Maybe if you don’t watch much Tv and he does that might be more of an issue in general….

AncientBallerina · 09/01/2023 23:19

The storyline, as others have commented revolves around the family getting caught up in money laundering. There is quite a lot of violence and some sexual violence but it is in the context of the scene that the family have got themselves into. Definitely some scenes set in a strip club although this is not the focus of the scenes. I don’t remember any prostitution. Yes the themes are adult but it’s definitely mainstream TV and certainly not among the most violent. Breaking Bad much more shocking IMO although also very good TV.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/01/2023 23:23

You have really got the wrong idea of this series.

It is about drugs and cartels and is very violent but mostly centres around one family and their lives. There are some scenes in a stripclub but the only thing they are to the plot is to demonstrate a front for drugs.

It's so very much more about individual people and their life stories.

I'd hate anyone I liked romantically to believe that my character was defined by my TV Viewing liking Ozark, Love Is Blind, Strictly, or Traitors or anything else

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 09/01/2023 23:25

It's a brilliant show.

Unicorn2022 · 09/01/2023 23:28

I absolutely loved Ozark, watched the whole thing (some episodes twice) and can't for the life of me remember a single stripping or prostitution scene. It was very dark and violent at times though and those are the scenes that have stuck in my mind. It was an incredible series.

I do have a big issue with women being used and abused for the entertainment of men, yes.

He doesn't watch loads of TV but definitely more than me. We don't watch much together just films now and again. It's what he usually does when we're not together. I've never said anything to him about what he watches. I just go to bed or do something else in a different room.

But I was starting to wonder if this is something that would be a problem long term. Not having different interests but if what he watches is upsetting for me.

I wouldn't ever try to manage waht he watches.

I've seen the ads for Ozark for years on netflix before I gave it a go.
Loved the first 3 series, rewatched it many times. You've obviously made up your mind which is fine but the strip club has such a small significance in it that it is not even relevant. Yes, there are a few (short) sex scenes in it (not related to the club) but no nudity. Violence, loss, dark atmosphere, tension, great acting? Yes.

PenanceAdair · 09/01/2023 23:58

Yes it's full of drugs, sex, nudity, crime but it's a fascinating story with twists after twists. Those things are sort of a byproduct of the story and yes some of them are gratuitous but you'll be hooked on what will happen next each time.

I'm someone who hates sex scenes and unnecessary nudity in films and TV shows but I love Ozark.

PenanceAdair · 10/01/2023 00:00

Infact I came on here because I thought someone was about to say they changed their minds and decided to start a new season.

<disappointed>

PenanceAdair · 10/01/2023 00:03

I mean, the crime isn't a byproduct - it's the point of the show.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 10/01/2023 00:07

It's been a while since I've watched it, so memory is faded, but 'full of sex' doesn't come to mind

Have you been in relationships before where you wanted to watch films together etc ? Has this never happened before ? I don’t think you can judge him for liking a very mainstream piece of television. I mean look at peaky blinders, happy valley, all sorts of thing that are very very popular with millions - doesn’t mean those millions of people are wrong uns. Very kindly, have you thought about having some professional help for what you find so triggering? You might not be able to avoid anything that upsets you forever?

constantindigestion · 10/01/2023 00:12

There's a lot of swearing and some violence , but other than that it's one if the best things I've watched.

I haven't had many relationships.

I have no problem with swearing, drugs, violence (except sexual violence). Its just the sex and nudity.

I have had therapy. It didn't work.

It's very easy for me to avoid things that might be triggering. I watch very little and never go to the cinema.

God I loved ozark. Ruth was brilliant, will miss seeing her.

PenanceAdair · 10/01/2023 00:28

Ruth was it! My God! The actress acted her arse off from beginning to end. I so wanted to hate Ruth at first but she was easily my favourite character.

ThreeLocusts · 10/01/2023 00:30

Hi OP - I watched a few episodes of Ozark b/o the lead actors and all the praise. Had to look away from some of the murders that start the story off.

But I thought it was well put together and well acted, and I most certainly wouldn't hold it against anyone if they liked it. Didn't stick with it because I like police procedurals with resolutions, not endlessly evolving crime storylines.

It has humour, too. The urban woman displaced to the countryside moaning that there's no pistachio ice cream to be had, while in acute danger of being made an example of....

She was exceptional wasn't she.

Judgyjudgy · 10/01/2023 00:35

It's SO good!! Also so many strong female roles, which also makes a nice change

I don't even remember prostitutes and strippers, I'm assuming that was more in the background. I hate nudity for the sake of it and that puts me off many shows. I honestly can't even remember that in Ozark. It was an excellent show, very clever. It's a must watch. I feel whoever put that on imdb was extremely sensitive

Me too!

There is a new season - Season 4.

21 January - over 3 months - 14 episodes.

HariKris · 10/01/2023 07:22

Oops! Season 4 was the last season. Sorry!

sure I read something recently there is another series being made. Maybe I got that wrong too.

Crinkle77 · 29/03/2023 22:59

DillDanding · 09/01/2023 23:06

I haven’t seen it, but everyone I know that has says it’s fantastic and a must watch. That includes my husband and my 19 year old. My 19 year old rated it up there with Breaking Bad.

I've just finished season 1. Bit slow to start off but last 3/4 episodes were brilliant. It's far better than Breaking Bad which I didn't think lived up to the hype. I certainly wouldn't say it was the best TV show ever as touted by some. The strip club is in the first few episodes but barely features and there's some sex but not a lot and nothing shocking.
