Did you know that Disney are adapting the Shardlake books for TV?

Oh, I’m excited! This series has been crying out to be adapted for the screen.

And now all we have to do is hope they don’t fuck it up.

What they really should do is involve me in the casting, so they don’t end up casting Channing Tatum or some other muscle bound American hunk as Matthew. And maybe give me script supervisory role too so I can ensure they don’t make too many alterations to the stories.

I'm now glad that the mooted BBC/Kenneth Branagh version never made it into production. I find him quite irritating.

It has to be Toby Jones! I've pictured him as shardlake forever.

And Brett Goldstein from Ted Lasso was born to play Jack.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 09/01/2023 12:00

Toby Jones would be perfect!

AffIt · 09/01/2023 12:04

Oh my goodness, this is brilliant news!

And yes, I agree Toby Jones would be absolutely ideal.

Toby Jones is definitely a good shout. He's skilled at looking like an unloved outsider, like lovely Matthew.

Had never heard of Brett Goldstein before but he's certainly swarthy and roguish looking.

I'll pop them both on the long list! Smile

Ted Lasso is second only to Schitts creek in sit com wonderfulness

Don't worry that it's about a football club. It's just the most heartwarming gentle and beautifully crafted show that's won dozens of awards.

And Brett playing a sweary footballer often shirtless is swoony. It's a proper treat I promise

I hope Disney have loads of money for the adaptation. I want it to be amazing! Maybe Anton Lesser as Shardlake's nemesis Sir Richard Rich. And Mackenzie Crook as the creepy guy from Revelation.

Needsomethingtoread · 09/01/2023 20:36

Oh, I love the series. I can’t wait!

nildesparandum · 09/01/2023 20:42

I am currently re reading this on Kindle.First read it all 10 years ago
NowI eagerly await the screen version.I hope they don't make a mess of it.

ModerationInEverything · 09/01/2023 20:46

I'm torn. I've never seen a TV series of anything that I enjoyed as much as the book, and I totally love Shardlake.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/01/2023 20:51

Is this going to be on a special decomposing animal section of the App? There's a lot of that in the books - horses, dogs, etc.

Songlines · 09/01/2023 20:53

I love the idea of Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crook being reunited in Shardlake!

bookworm14 · 09/01/2023 20:54

Oh this is exciting. Toby Jones would be brilliant

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/01/2023 20:55

That's a lot of decomposing animals for them to create in post.

Aw, is Toby Jones a bit...old?
I'm slogging through Tombland and he's only 44 in it.
Anyone else find Tombland a bit...long?

Xiaoxiong · 09/01/2023 21:04

Ooh I always pictured Matthew as Eddie Marsan! But I concede that Toby Jones would be good too.

Songlines · 09/01/2023 21:05

Eddie Marsan would be another great choice

Xiaoxiong · 09/01/2023 21:06

@ModerationInEverything - I know what you mean - I enjoyed the TV adaptations of Little Drummer Girl and the Night Manager much more than the books (and I liked the books!) but they may be the exceptions that prove the rule.

frugalkitty · 09/01/2023 21:08

Oooh but I don't know how I feel about this!

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Detectorists! Might not work in that case Grin

Tombland was screeching out for a big edit. Could have been cut by a third and been all the sharper for it.

RenoDakota · 09/01/2023 21:20

Am currently listening to the BBC radio adaptation on Audible, with Jason Watkins as Shardlake. It is utterly fabulous.

Hellohah · 09/01/2023 21:29

Oh, this is exciting. I love the series. But who will play Barak?
