WTF Is causing this pain?

babynoname22 · 09/01/2023 00:38

I thought it was toothache but seems too severe!

Pain on one side of face across jaw bone to ear and across the eye socket to side of nose and into head. I honestly want to rip my head off. I've never felt pain like it and I've birthed two babies!! It's radiating pain.

Earache? Toothache????

I've taken some co codamol (8/500)
Swilled with salt water put an ice pack on and it still there. Please help me what to do! Will try for an emergency dentist appointment tomorrow. I have a small hole in a tooth on that side I've had for ages and due at the dentist on Friday but if this continues I need to be seen before then it's debilitating! No sensitivity to hot or cold though

Any ideas?

I hate to say this but it sounds like neuralgia. Has it just started or has there been any lead up t it?

Knobknob · 09/01/2023 00:40

Worst pain I've ever felt like this has been an ear infection. Don't put anything in it - some lunatic will suggest olive oil but DON'T - and go to the doctor

babynoname22 · 09/01/2023 00:42

@Passthewinebottle it started around 7 much more mild. I thought it was toothache. Took two ibuprofen and cracked on putting the kids to bed. Then 11.30 suddenly my head was exploding.

Yes it could be trigeminal neuralgia. You really do need to go to your GP. They may need to arrange for you to see a specialist.

babynoname22 · 09/01/2023 00:43

@Knobknob how do I know if earache or toothache. It's in my jaw rather than ear if that makes sense?

If you can't make it through the night possibly best to.go to A and E.

Passthewinebottle · 09/01/2023 00:47

I'm hoping for your sake it is toothache or similar. DH had trigeminal neuralgia, it was a horrific time, as bad as you describe every day pretty much. I don't remember it coming on that bad so quickly though, it was more gradual. I really hope you can get relief ASAP OP xx

babynoname22 · 09/01/2023 00:49

Jesus. Trigeminal neuralgia is terrifying. Praying to god it's just toothache.

The worst pain has eased and just a horrid throbbing sensation now. Still awful but not head splitting so like earlier.

babynoname22 · 09/01/2023 00:51

@Passthewinebottle I'm sorry for your DH how awful.

I was incapacitated for a good 40 mins. I can't imagine feeling like this long term. And looking after my small DC (2 and 3 months!)

Gosh OP that sounds unbearable. Have you got anything else you can take with cocodamol, ibuprofen maybe?

DH had a brain op in 2008 and thankfully it cured him with zero side effects, we are so lucky xx

Keep talking to us, anything that can help xxx

babynoname22 · 09/01/2023 00:57

@Passthewinebottle I've taken ibuprofen too.

Glad your DH is ok now but a brain op must have been very scary

I don't know but my ear infection were like you've described - pain in my jaw and throughout my head. Get an emergency appointment if you can. Good luck

babynoname22 · 09/01/2023 01:20

If it was toothache wouldn't I have temperature sensitivities?

Just trying to figure out if I need a dentist or doctor appointment tomorrow

Dental sinus is extremely painful.

mummabear74 · 09/01/2023 01:28

I've suffered with trigeminal neuralgia in the past. My advice would be to try to get an emergency dental appointment. If the dentist says it's not toothache then go to GP. Paracetamol, ibuprofen and cocodamol had no effect on the TN pain. I really hope it'd just toothache.

agutrew · 09/01/2023 02:16

Sorry you are in so much pain. Maybe ring 111and get some advice. You may be able to get an out of hours emergency doctor's appointment.

DontStopMeNow7 · 09/01/2023 02:33

I once had an infection in my jaw bone after having my wisdom teeth cut out. It’s the worst pain I’ve ever experienced- worse than childbirth. I’m guessing you will need antibiotics and a prescription dose of ibuprofen.

If it gets worse call 111. At the very least they can advise you on how much ibuprofen you can take.

unsync · 09/01/2023 03:23

Could be an abcess in tooth. I had this during first lockdown when everything was shut. The pain was awful, throughout my face, ear, eye and throbbed. I took codeine and paracetamol for weeks and it barely touched it. Instant relief when I eventually managed to get the tooth pulled.

Toomanylosthours · 09/01/2023 03:36

I'm hedging my bets you are suffer sinusitis. I experienced exactly the same symptoms last year, the tooth ache was horrendous. Prescription sinister spray and some antibiotics cleared it.

Could it be TMJ?

Lummikukka · 09/01/2023 07:11

I have migraines like that, exacerbated I think by something going on in sinus.

Passthewinebottle · 09/01/2023 07:15

I hope you managed to get some rest OP? Or relief at the very least x

Joystir59 · 09/01/2023 07:18

Shingles developing?

babynoname22 · 09/01/2023 09:04

I managed to get some sleep. The pain is just a dull ache now. Like a dull ache. But not head splitting like it was last night. I'm stunned how bad it was I've never been in a state like that before.

I've managed to get a dental appointment at 12.10 today at my dental practise. Did try for a doctors appointment but at 8.04 no appointments left after I tired ringing 74 times at 8am when they opened

Thanks for your suggestions. Hopefully dentist can rule out what's going on.
