How did they learn/how did you teach them?

Do you speak the language too?

Mine learned Welsh in school - I speak hardly any and DH only has the basics. He enjoys mocking our efforts Grin

My husband has a different mother tongue.

Both parents spoke to the kids in their own language.
They got them mixed up a bit and it took them a bit longer to tell fluently, but both are fluent now.

Mine speak 3 - English, Basque and Spanish.

They get Spanish from tv and books. It’s incredible how much you can pick up from tv! And Spanish is a very easy language.

The great thing is that they are really open to other languages now and not shy about trying out new words when we travel. They don’t know how privileged they are yet.

French.

we live in France so all their education has been in French and all their friends are French. We speak only English at home.

They are truly bilingual and have great accents because they’ve learnt French from French people, rather than from DH and I 😂

Mine are both fluent Spanish speakers. We lived in Madrid for a few years when they were younger.

From having two parents of different nationalities with different native languages. We are all bilingual to a large extent but the children are 'true' bilinguals in that they have two native languages.

All I did to teach them English is what any mother does - talk to them, read to them, sing to them. There's a bit more to it than that but that's the core of it.
