Passport and original marriage certificate

I need a new passport due to name change/expired old one and the government website says to send ‘original’ marriage certificate.

Does this actually mean the hand-written one from the registrar? Why not a new certificate obtained from the register office? I am very loathe to send the absolute original in case it gets lost.

It can be the original, a second official copy you can apply for or a photocopy certified by a solicitor. They just mean not a photocopy you have done yourself. You send it securely & signed for and they do the same on return.

It means an official version rather than you photocopying one at home.

We no longer have our origin one, just a reissued one from a few months later and its identical in every way.

It can be another one issued from the registrars. Those are official. I sent mine off yesterday for my new passport. When we went to collect our marriage certificate she asked his n mom any we’d like and I got 3. One has been sent, here, there and everywhere. Those are accepted as original as they come from the registrars.
