Child brides

Now I know I could Google this, but not sure what I would see!
was watching a American tv show set in a hospital, it turned out a patient who was a child was the bride. Now I know the story was made up, but no one got into trouble as in some states it was still legal! And had only been made illegal in that state the previous year.
is it actually legal in 2022 in the USA?

In some states yes. My whole family is from the USA. I had a (distant) cousin who got married at 15. I think Louis Theroux did a documentary about it actually, might be on iPlayer. Awful.

(Not about my cousin! The whole subject I mean)!

Yep.... with the parents consent it's legal in some states.
As young as 12 in some states I believe.
Depressing.

I’ve been looking for the documentary I mentioned.. found this one. Not sure if it’s Louis T after all.

Yep. Sadly. The age of consent is insanely low in more states too

yes it is. Google and you’ll get a wiki list of the ages.

apparently as well it’s not uncommon for a rapist to marry their (child) victim, to escape punishment- i think it gets around the statutory rape thing?

in some states I think the age of consent is older than the age of marriage, iirc.

Yes this happens a lot and sadly often the child’s family will go along with it or even give their permission if required (and it isn’t always, dependent on state) because they’d rather their child was married and pregnant rather than pregnant through rape (which is exactly what it is obviously) and single.

It’s beyond shocking
