Quick question about removal costs

Roughly how much do you think removals would cost to move from a first floor 3-bed flat to another first floor flat approx 1 mile away, including packing and disassembling/reassembling furniture such as wardrobes?

I've had a quote for £3k+ and I'm a bit 😲, but maybe I'm out of touch.

3 bed to 4 bed, 15 miles away, but we did the packing ourselves, £750+vat. I’ve found it’s the packing that increases the cost

unsync · 06/01/2023 17:37

Sounds about right, distance not highly relevant unless it's long distance. Packing etc is time consuming. Packing materials have also increased in cost

Therapee · 06/01/2023 18:16

Actually I've just reread the quote, and it's even worse. £3500 for moving (and assembling furniture) plus £600+ on top of that for packing. Yikes.

We moved last year. £700 +VAT for moving a 4 bedroom house 3 miles down the road, this did not include bed/cupboard assembly which would have been another £200. Seems like a very high quote!

Therapee · 06/01/2023 18:54

I was reckoning on about £1500 max.

I've just moved (3 bed to 4 bed about a mile away) and I too reckoned it would be max £1500.

3 quotes (full packing and disassembling/ assembling furniture) and the cheapest ended up being £2500. £600 was the packing. Quotes ranged up to nearly £4k.

321zyx · 06/01/2023 19:05

Recently moved from a 3 floor 4 bed house to a 3 floor 3 bed house 30 miles away (in the SE), £1,500 with no packing, second quote was c£1,700.

mrsed1987 · 06/01/2023 19:07

We moved in August from 3 bed to 4 bed but the garage was full so needed a lorry and a van.

It was less than £1500

123woop · 06/01/2023 19:18

£3.5K!!!!! That sounds extortionate. We moved a mile away (small terrace to a larger house) and that was £350 + vat.

OttilieKnackered · 06/01/2023 19:21

I’ve just paid £1200 for: packing, disassembling and moving (plus picking up a couple of big items from 2 other destinations within five miles) from a first floor one bed flat to a three bed terrace. Costs were roughly split:

500 moving
200 disassembling and reassembling (including washing machine etc)
300 packing
200 extra trips (mainly as these were last minute additions)

We would have packed ourselves but we were last minute before Christmas and I am pretty heavily pregnant.

mondaytosunday · 06/01/2023 19:26

I moved last year. Large 4 bed house to three bed house and storage unit 70 miles away including ferry. They packed it over two days. It was cheaper than your quote.
Get two more.

Therapee · 06/01/2023 20:36

@mondaytosunday I definitely will! I'd already booked a couple of other quotes, and I'd expected this one to be one of the cheaper ones 😬

I’d shop around - I had over 4k difference in quotes for move, packing & storage from one house to another.

Ended up paying just over 2k for move, over 3 months storage and packing for a move of 45 mins from a 2 bed house to a 3 bed.

Therapee · 07/01/2023 16:24

@Bookishandblondish wow! That's quite a difference in price!

@Therapee can I ask if you got removals in the end and would you recommend?

Therapee · 18/01/2024 07:45

We went with Alba removals. They were pretty much the cheapest company we could find and it was £2k.

They worked REALLY hard and were patient and kind when there was a 2ish hour delay on getting the keys (our solicitors had screwed something up 🙄).

So yes I'd recommend them!

@Therapee thank you!!

Wetweatherandmud · 22/01/2024 11:13

We've just moved about 500m. Three storey house to two storey, much smaller house. Quote with packing, disassembling and assembling was about £3,000. We decided to do our own packing and collapse and rebuild our furniture and the cost came down to £1,200.

Pipsquiggle · 22/01/2024 11:15

I think the issue may be the '1st floor' aspect in both properties - that will be harder work than some larger properties.

Definitely get some more quotes.

When we were in flats, we often used 'man with a van' outfits - much cheaper, but also less used to removals so some items were broken. You get what you pay for.

Pipsquiggle · 22/01/2024 11:19

Apologies just realised you've already moved! Hope you are enjoying your new place
