Got Fingersmith for Christmas. The Little Stranger and Affinity were good. Not quick reads but the character's complex.

I always loved Whit by Iain Banks. Haven't re read it for ages but I remember as a late teen loving the fact that the female narrator was so proactive in her own interests .
