Lessons and breaks - how long? (secondary school)

Just curious, what is your or your children's experience?
What time does the school start and finish? Is it the same every day?
How long are the lessons and how long are the breaks inbetween?

Start at 8.35. Periods are 40 minutes long and some lessons are double or triples. One 10 minute break mid morning. Lunch 40 minutes but are staggered for different year groups. School finishes at 4 or 4.40 depending on year group. No afternoon break

Each single period has 5 minutes between to allow travel to next class I should have mentioned.

Mine are 845 -315. Lunch is 40 mins from 1250. There is a morning break of around 10/15 mins but can't remember what time. They have three lessons 90 minutes long, two in the morning before lunch one after.

DD isn't in secondary yet but her older cousin is at the one she is likely to attend.

They start at 8:30 and finish at 3:15. Within that time they have 5 periods of one hour with 5 minutes at the end to move around the school. Morning break is 10:35 - 10:50 and lunch is 12:20 - 13:10.

5x1 hour lessons. Start at 8.40. Finish at 3pm. 15 min break after 2 lessons, then lunch after next two lessons then one lesson and home.

My dd starts at 9.15! There are several schools in the area and they have to stagger arriving and leaving times.

One hour lessons. 45 min lunch, 15 min break and finish at 3:30.

l still have to drag her out of bed!

Tutor period first thing and then again straight after lunch.

Secondary teacher here. 5 lessons, all 1 hour long. 2 lessons, break (20 mins), 1 lesson, lunch (45 mins), 2 lessons home time.

5 mins movement time between p1 and 2 and 4 and 5. 20 mins tutor.

@SeasonFinale Is that a private school? Those hours seem unusual.

Independent school: 9 lessons per day of 45 mins. Some doubles and Yr 9 onwards some triples.
8.45 registration/chapel then 9am start through to 4pm. 1 hour lunch and morning break of 20 mins. 4pm-5pm is mandatory clubs/sports/extra curriculum. School day finishes 5pm.

5 one hour lessons, 50 minutes for dinner and 20 minute break.

My school: 8.40 to 2.45.

90 min block in which you either have lunch then lesson, or lesson the lunch (lunch always 30 mins)
1 final lesson.

Kids school - 8.50 to 3.10.
5x 1 hour lessons. 1 break. 1 lunch. Not sure how it's split - fairly sure break and lunch are at different times for different Key stages.

6x50 minute lessons, no ‘travel time’ in between.

Morning break is 30 min and afternoon break 20 min.

We finish quite early in comparison to other schools (2:45). Most of the younger students do an after school club as well; the older ones are a little harder to persuade until we get to the revision session.

Lots of historic reasons connected to it being a ‘difficult’ school (it’s not really these days) - most students having hot meal at morning break because they’ve not had breakfast and shorter breaks reducing problems at social times, for example. I feel like we might be due for a change soon.

DD's school has five 1hr lessons each day: a 20 min break in the morning between lesson 1 and 2/3, a 45 minute lunch and then two more afternoon lessons.
School I work at has 8 x 40 min lessons each day (some arranged as doubles), and again minimal breaks and a short lunch in favour of finishing at 3.10pm.

Starts at 8.50 with 10 registration class then 50 minute periods. 15 minute morning break after period 2 then 45 minutes for lunch after period 4. Monday and Tuesday they have 2 periods in the afternoon finishing at 3.50. Then Wednesday, Thursday and Friday only 1 after lunch and finish at 3pm.

And all the secondary schools in the local authority have the same school hours

I was very sceptical, especially 20 minute lunch breaks for around 2k children to eat lunch, but my dc like it and it seems to work. I thought (especially ds who has adhd) would find 1 hour lessons difficult to concentrate through, but they say it gives them chance to really concentrate on a lesson. When they got double lessons (at A-level) they (although ds hasn't got there yet!) loved those.
They're amused that I got anything done with 35 minute lessons, which is what I had.

This is fascinating! I’m quite shocked at triple lessons that are 3x45 mins!! It can’t be easy for teachers to keep kids engaged for that long esp if this is prior to option choices.
DDs starts at 825 ends at 4, they have 5 x 1hr lessons per day, 5 mins travel time, 25 min morning break and an hour for lunch albeit there’s 1st lunch & 2nd lunch with opposing sports/clubs during 1st & 2nd lunch.

Indie school. Start 8.45. Lessons 5 x 55 minutes with 5 mins to get to next one. Break 20 mins. Lunch 80 mins in two sittings, but that's when most students do clubs/rehearsals/training. Finish at 4 pm.

Start 8.45 finish 3.15. Lessons 75m with 5 minute travel.time. 1 lesson then.20m.break 2 lessons then lunch at 1.20. Restart 2.00 then.another lesson.for 75m. Break and lunch nit long enough.

At my school homeroom starts at 8:40 at 850 you have 2 40 minute long classes then resece is 30 minuts then 1 80 minute long class and 30 minute lunch and copends on day Monday you go to homeroom untill 220 pm and go home or go home during lunch for year 11 and 12 and on Tuesday go to a 80 minute class or 2 40 minute class
