Vasectomy and divorce

My mum has a weird theory that every single relationship in which the man has a vasectomy then goes on to break up.

She has a string of relationships she knows where this is the case amongst her friends/my friends/family friends. And I have to admit she's correct with her list of people this has happened to, she's not making it up.

In fact we don't know one couple who have had a vasectomy and are still together 10/15 years later.

Can I hear lots of stories where this is not the case, please? DH and I are thinking of a vasectomy but currently feel like it will doom our relationship.

Please prove my mum wrong!

@GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia I didn't say it was shameful. It's certainly a private matter. I wonder how many people are on OP Mum's list? Why the interest?

Don’t know anyone close who’s had it, but my family are quite private and unless volunteered I would know about friends. The only case I know about was a guy I went to school with had one very young, he had 3 kids by 25, divorced and remarried another school friend, they were openly talking about trying to reverse his op at a school reunion.

Ha! I recently observed your mum’s theory. My friends DH had a vasectomy, and they were split within the year.

But he was a twat long before the vasectomy. So as long as your DH isn’t a twat…

In every couple I know well enough to know their contraceptive use (we're in our 50s and that's probably 10 couples), the husband has had a vasectomy. They are all still together. My dh had one 15 or so years ago.
I suspect it's just because it's such a normal thing to do that your mum has seized upon it as the common factor. She might as well have said "every couple I know who has split up had a garden/car/children".

dworky · 06/01/2023 09:46

Absolute nonsense!
She's been listening to MRA rhetoric.

blueberrypie29 · 06/01/2023 09:48

Vasectomies are common, divorce is common.. doesn't mean there's a link between the two!

abyssofwoah · 06/01/2023 09:52

I think your mum is angling for more grandchildren. Vasectomies don’t cause divorce but not having one could very well lead to more children!

Nimbostratus100 · 06/01/2023 09:55

I am aware of vasectomies in relatively few of my circle. All still together though. I am in my 50s, so talking about people of my age, and the generation above. Marriages of 20 + years, going up to one which is 30 years post vasectomy now

TiredButAlive · 06/01/2023 10:00

Okay .... here's a slightly different perspective. My husband had a vasectomy and then my GP insisted I came off the Pill as "we didn't need it". Despite my protests that the Pill suited me and regulated my cycle I had to come off it. What followed was ten years of appalling peri menopause symptoms that I'm sure contributed to the break up of our marriage. I realise now (on the other side) I was anxious, depressed and physically impacted. I wonder if we would have made it if he hadn't had the snip and I could have stayed on the Pill (or just had a GP living in the 21st C!!!)

My dad had a vasectomy after my brother was born. Parents still together. Brother is 36.

romany4 · 06/01/2023 10:50

DH had a vasectomy at 28 after the birth of our second child.
He's now 53 and we're still married

tiger2691 · 06/01/2023 11:42

I had a vasectomy in early 1994, by the end of the year I was divorcing my wife, purely coincidental imo.

JustCheckingItsThem · 06/01/2023 11:45

Is your mother saying that vasectomies cause divorce? Or that having one makes a marriage more likely to fail?

Toddlerteaplease · 06/01/2023 12:16

Apparently my dad had one after my sister was born. Parents still happily together after 45 years.
