Lost & expired passport

I can't find any answers online!!

I've not been in a financial position to go abroad for YEARS so I haven't given my passport a look in for quite a while.

I'm finally able to go this year, and I'm know my passport expired in 2020, so I went to go get it out of my "important documents" file to do a renewal and send it back with the forms and it's not there!!! I've searched the house high and low and it's no where to be found 😬

For some reason I can't be verified on the government website (tried to do this with my licence a couple of years ago) so I have absolutely no idea what to do about my passport!

Do I declare it as lost and then apply for a renewal? Or do I need to apply for a new one? I'm so confused and like I said there isn't any information about a lost AND expired passport online!

I think you have to declare it as lost and then renew. I can't imagine you're allowed more than one on the go (even if one is expired) so a new application is likely to cause problems, and a renewal normally needs to be accompanied by the expired/expiring passport. Hope it works out with minimal faff!

Can confirm you need to report lost first then renew. I had to do it last year.
