Apart from ikea, where to buy cheap furniture?

We are moving to the U.K. for a year and need to buy some furniture for our rental. I know ikea but over here in Aus we have Temple and Webster which also does nice, non cheap looking but reasonably priced furniture too. What places does the U.K. have for furniture that won’t break the bank but will look pretty ok?

JYSK, Argos, Dunelm. Saying that though I do find IKEA is better quality than these.

There’s normally a few furniture charity shops in larger places, cheap and good quality as a rule

Second hand is a great option -FB marketplace works well. You can pick up great furniture as a fraction of the original cost.

Facebook marketplace, gumtree, etc. Better for the environment too

Veryactivenymphomaniac · 03/01/2023 22:06

Second hand definitely. Much better quality. And most probably cheaper.

The cheaper John Lewis range - anyday, I think it’s called - is about the same as IKEA for pricing.

AnotherEmma · 03/01/2023 22:08

Second hand. Try FB marketplace, Gumtree, BHF, Emmaus, or just Google "second hand furniture [city name]".

If buying new, IKEA is by far the best option.

Hi OP, we renovated our house in the pandemic (all the yikes) and were running on fumes by the end.

I got a beautiful Gplan dining table and chairs, and 2 matching Dwell sofas off eBay for under £250 delivered. Everyone always complements them, the table is so nice and the sofas cost around a thousands quid EACH new.

If you buy second hand then you can re-sell again when you leave and recoup your spend :)

It all depends on your taste but I like Dwell, Loaf, Made.com etc for sofas, vintage Gplan dining tables - and beds from IKEA!

I second eBay! I bought a lovely barker and stone house dining table, mirror and coffee table and dining chairs. When I turned up to get them came from a stately home! And when I moved I resold them on eBay for about what I paid for them. I would still have them today if my new house could fit them!

Seconding anyday at John Lewis. Also sostrene green does quite nice pieces if you're nearby to one.

Wayfair - it's online but huge choice
I second eBay and Facebook too for second hand

MyMachineAndMe · 03/01/2023 22:25

We bought a large solid wood table and chairs from asda living. A solid wood side table and the same style drawers set from B&Ms. A large rattan style modular corner unit with a glass-topped coffee table from Wayfair. A large rug and a kallax type thing from Amazon. 2 cabin beds from Argos.

I would also recommend charity shops - I got an Ikea Poang chair from my local one for £30 the other day. However, if you are wanting to furnish your whole house in one go charity shops might not be the easiest option. When I lived abroad and was moving back to the uk, I went to my local ikea, chose the furniture I wanted, then made a shopping list online, when I got back to the uk, I went to ikea, handed them the list and they will pick it all for you and put it on a trolley (for a fee), I then paid for it and wheeled it over to the delivery desk and it was delivered the next day - it was a very easy process.

That’s great, thanks so much everyone!
