Audible - am I missing the point?

So I pay a monthly fee to access the mediocre stuff? Then get 1 credit per month for the decent stuff?

Long car journey coming up and I wanted to listen to some comedy things. So I could download one comedy show with my 1 credit, right?

Then I have to pay more on top of the monthly fee if I want to listen to more??

It feels a lot tbh.

The French and Saunders podcast is worth the fee alone.

Agree, this is very funny.

Library apps Libby and borrow box are totally free and have great content. You just need a library card.

I think the OP knows this by now.

I love Audible. I've been a member for a few years now and have built up a library of hundreds of books.

It started as primarily an audio book subscription service and that's how I think of it - I can buy audio books far cheaper as an Audible member than I would otherwise.

I mainly use my credits for high price books (omnibus collections etc) then use deals to buy shorter books.

The additional content (podcasts and books included with membership) wasn't there when I joined so I think of that as a great, unexpected bonus.

Have to admit that my traditional, strategic buying strategy has gone slightly to pot at the moment: Mumsnet recommendations have got me hooked on the Chronicles of St Mary's and I'm rattling through the audiobooks in the series.

You’ll soon find yourself buying extras credits to get the short stories and the Time Police series. 🤣 Can I recommend to you that if you haven’t bought any of the St Mary’s short stories yet, you buy The Long and the Short of it. It’s a compilation of all the earliest short stories plus an unpublished story’s, much better value than buying them individually.

Great tip. Thanks!

I haven't bought any of the short stories yet because they seemed a waste of a credit.

If you’re chewing through them like sweeties, take a look at the 24 book annual subscription. Much better value and VERY enabling….

How do I change my subscription to 24 credits? I can't find an option to do it....

cariadlet · 08/01/2023 07:32

I changed to a 24 credit subscription last year.

A few months ago, I realised that I was listening to so many podcasts that I wasn't using Audible so much and had loads of credits left. I thought 24 credits had been a waste of money.

But now I'm back into audio books (largely due to getting hooked on the Chronicles of St Mary's) and I've only got 5 left to last me until April. 😁

Ben Miles. Fantastic. He worked closely with Hilary and played Cromwell in the West End.

Thank you (I name changed). This is next on the list then.

Scribd is about £10 a month I think and no limit on books. But seems mainly American books and narrators.Livrevox is another one but many volunteer narrators. It’s free but asks for donations occasionally.

GlmPmum · 08/01/2023 08:24

My local library offers free audio books that you can listen to via an app, could you try that, it's free and a no brainer to me.

I don’t know why this is irritating me so much, but yes, this has been mentioned several times on this thread, mainly by people who haven’t read the full thread

I am on the one book and can buy three credits for £18 when I need to.

A PP said that they can get extra credits for £3 something. Is this the case if you are on the 2 books a month deal?

I can’t remember how I switched over - I think maybe I called them up. Once you’re on it it’s easy to renew / set up a new annual plan.

Love St Mary’s, I think you’re being very reasonable in your splurging.

If you do use them up before April you can just start a new 24 book annual subscription early. I’ve done this several times. Obv this doesn’t help at all with the splurging…

Do it on web not app, click on you at the top right hand side then member details or something like that, will then show your current plan and underneath are little tabs one of which is switch plan.
Super easy, too easy, be cautious 🤣 did it last week on back of this thread and gone thorough five credits already !

That wouldn't suit me because I like to listen to books again.
