The long Goodbye's when leaving a social

When you are ready to leave & return home but end up taking small steps towards the exit door for Ages because the person(s) you're leaving with, take so long going round each person individually. After the obligatory hugs, hand shakes, best wishes etc it nearly always seems to trigger the nostalgic old stories that then have to be rehashed.

I hate this..half of the family is desperate to leave, the other half wants to keep chatting..would love to just sneak off!

Heyahun · 02/01/2023 16:36

I always just sneak out 🤣

Iheartmysmart · 02/01/2023 16:40

This is so annoying. I now refuse lifts anywhere when going out as I can’t be arsed with the incessant dithering when I want to go home.

ineedasweatshirt · 02/01/2023 16:42

Yes! I just say I'm off now quick hugs and out the door. They've had an hour or two or three to talk to me.

PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2023 16:42

DP is awful for this, he’ll stop to say goodbye to folk but then start entirely new topics of conversation which end up going on for ages.

I end jobs hanging there like a lemon with my coat on, feeling a hot flush coming on and wondering if I should take coat off again but worrying that will signal we’re staying. Argh.

PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2023 16:42

*I end up.

vivaespanaole · 02/01/2023 16:45

My ex used to do this. It drove me insane!!!

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2023 16:48

I suppose if this is a weekly thing, it would get old quick. But if it will be months on end before you will see each other again, it's just a sadness at leaving - it's hard to begrudge that.

KindergartenKop · 02/01/2023 16:49

ugh DH is like this. Just say goodbye to the host, wave at the room and leave!

thecatsthecats · 02/01/2023 16:49

Ha, I get this.

I drove for NY, and it was an hour home, so after 1am, I'd had enough being sober. Yet it was a full half hour for the ILs to go round saying goodbye to their friends we were spending NY with... Who we also saw Christmas Day, and they see every weekend!

They buggered off straight after midnight from ours.

This is me.

I also have only a select few I'll offer lifts to - the ones who know that leaning means actually exiting the venue Grin

Ponderingtosk · 02/01/2023 16:55

I say a proper goodbye to the host, then I shout byeeeee, wave lots and run!

Dragonskin · 02/01/2023 17:10

Sod that, the random disappearing act is a much more effective exit strategy

beachhutenvy · 02/01/2023 17:12

My family are awful for this. Trying to leave on Xmas day - been there all day - one tries to ask husband an intense medical question (he's an HCP). I've got my coat on door half open...
