Where in Scotland for a short break in Feb?

Dd (13) and I want to go to Scotland for a few nights in Feb half term. Can anyone recommend a spot that would be really nice to visit in the winter?

Dramatic scenery / dark skies would be great. (Northern lights a bonus but I know that is really unlikely!)

In my dreams this would a log cabin in the mountains but I'll settle for anything realistic and affordable! (Hostel or BnB is fine)

I love pitlochry and Tummell valley areas.

also Aberfeldy

Loch Lomond which is really near Glasgow if the weather is awful and you want indoor things to do

Following for future reference!

I’m desperate to go to Scotland but DH wants to prioritise other destinations, so it may very well be a jaunt with just me and the kids.

We were looking at Dumfries and Galloway. Apparently quite famous for dark skies. More in the summer though when the weather might be a bit better..

Yes, Ballater is lovely, lots of hill and loch walking, great food.

Perthshire or Cairngorms.

I live in Scotland. Between September and March is the best time to see the Norther Lights in Aberdeenshire.

It’s quite far north, we’re local so not as big a deal but DH & I stayed here in September.

Stunning dark skies, nothing to hear but owls hooting, hot tub, fire, and although very romantic, I’ve told my own teen DD we’ll go ourselves sometime this year as she’s very arty and there are loads of sketching and photography opps.

Aberdeenshire, Moray or speyside are your best bets for Northern lights.
The coast is less scenic in the sense of more agricultural but in land still hills and lochs.
Ballater is a good shout and if you ski there is a chance to go to the slopes
