Why does hearing our voice give us the ick

Curious about the psychology on this one.

Why do people hate the sound of their voice on a video or recording? Seems to be really common.

I'm no different, can't stand it and gives me the ick - I feel like I have a posh manly voice (DH disagrees and loves my voice)...

Do we think it's a self loathing thing? Why are we (often) repulsed by the sound of our own voice?

Same goes for seeing yourself on video (particularly if someone else has taken the clip), so much ick!

Because it’s something we think we know and yet we don’t hear it often. So it’s disarming when we do. When we realise that is the voice that everyone knows but ourselves.

It’s horrible!

I guess if you’re an actor and have to sit through your own films you must get used to it??

@Candymay you're right, I think disarming is a powerful adjective there! You think you know your voice but you really don't...

Because the sound we hear through our own bone and flesh is different from the sound others- and recordings- hear. It's 'not quite right' like our image when it's not reversed by a mirror.

Because we think we know our own voice, but how we sound to ourselves is not how we sound on a recording.

Same with a photo/video, when we look at our reflection in the mirror, we see a reverse of what everyone else is seeing, so it's odd to see ourselves the way others do.
