Places similar to Nice, France

Last year DH and I went to Nice and loved it. We loved that it was beachfront, beautiful side streets, a bit of hustle and bustle, lots of amazing food and had a nice vibe to it.

We are looking to go on a couple of European breaks this year, probably one in June and one in September for 4-5 nights each.

We don’t drink and don’t enjoy a wild night life. We enjoy nice food, nice coffee shops, a beachfront/harbour location, lovely views.

Where would you recommend? Bonus points for accommodation recommendations too!

Antibes in June when I went about 6 or 7 years ago was lovely, the other place on the French coast I really enjoyed was Arcachon (west of Bordeaux), though slightly smaller. Although inland, you might also enjoy Bordeaux, especially during their food festival in June.

Sitges?

Sparkleblu · 31/12/2022 14:08

Thank you, I’ll look in to all options. I’d be interested in places in Spain and Italy too.

I wondered if Palermo was worth a visit

La Rochelle is really lovely too.

Nauplion in Greece. Perfect for what you want.

Barcelona?

If you want to go further afield, and can go out of season, the Cinque Terre in Italy is stunning. Also Portofino in the same area.

Pedallleur · 31/12/2022 14:21

Biarritz? Somewhere on the Italian Ligurian coast

Pedallleur · 31/12/2022 14:21

There you go, Liguria.

Palma de Mallorca

Villefranche and Antibes are lovely, but v close to Nice, so if you’re looking for somewhere different I’d look further afield. We’ve had similar experiences on the Dalmatian coast (Croatia) and Malaga. Some lake or river front towns and cities offer a slightly similar vibe, like the Italian lakes (eg Como), Salzburg/Vienna, Bled in Slovenia.

San Remo on the Italian Riviera or Syracuse in Sicily are both lovely.

La Rochelle is really lovely too.

Another vote for La Rochelle.

Alghero in Sardinia. Lovely ancient walled town, huge beach. 10minute taxi ride from the airport.

littlestowl · 31/12/2022 14:35

Oh yes Malaga is also lovely.

Dubrovnik - although I haven’t been in years no idea what it’s like now.

Lisbon can also be nice but more spread out

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 31/12/2022 14:38

Second for Porto and Malaga, also Sorrento.

Einszwei · 31/12/2022 14:40

I would recommend Trieste or somewhere in Croatia like Split. Dubrovnik is beautiful but small and completely overrun with cruise ship passengers.

Lisbon is also lovely but not really the same vibe as Nice.

Barcelona. Amazing city.

Soproudoflionesses · 31/12/2022 14:52

Malaga, Trouville, Dauville and La Rochelle.

mincepiepie · 31/12/2022 17:21

Dubrovnik is nice. But it's not France nice

Ibiza town, Venice and cinque terre are all nice. And give me that OMG this place is perfect feels!

I went to villefranche which is a suburb of nice and I was blown away how magical it was but I really do think I love France since I was 11 and went to Mont St Michel.
