Hi All

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with Medikinet with their children. My 7yo DS has just been prescribed this and I’m so worried about starting him on it. He’s got a starting dose of 5mg. He has both ADHD and Autism if that makes a difference.

Ds started on the slow release tablets at 7, which was a pain because I had to go to his school at lunch times to give him the next dose. He moved on to Medikinet XL about 6 months after and it's been brilliant. Completely transformed his school life. At the beginning we saw CAMHS every 2-3 weeks to make sure he was tolerating it and then gradually moved appointments further apart. They gradually increased his dose until we found the right one, we knew when it was slightly too high as he developed motor ticks but they went away as soon as it was lowered. It does affect his appetite massively so he has a big breakfast, very small lunch and then a big dinner and snacks in the evening. He no longer takes it on the weekend or school holidays unless we have something on that he thinks he'll need the extra help so that's the time his weight will balance out.

He's 15 now and on 36mg and doing very well. Good luck!

Thank you for that. We currently homeschool due to DS not coping at all in school, maybe this medication can help that. My DS has severe issues around eating at the moment due to his sensory problems so loss of appetite is a bit of a worry but we are at the point where we have to try something. I’m so glad it all went well for your son though it gives me hope x
