What embarrassing incidents have happened to you when you were intoduced to DCs partners

This often comes up when we talk about how we first met my DS, DW, They met at Uni, and had been seeing each other a while, she is a lovely girl, quite shy and traditional. Our family are slightly crazy at times and when my DS said he wanted us to meet her, he told us all to be 'normal' and on our best behaviour, in particular his older DB who often did things that were quite silly and OTT

So DW arrived, i was at the time lying on the sofa with my head on the arm rest, I say hello, she sits on the other sofa and I am on the other near the door, when my other DS appears backwards into the room, doing a Mooney, topples over and lands on my head! (he hadn't known she had arrived) so this poor girls first experience of meeting us was to witness her BIL fall backwards on to her MILs face with his bum out! She said later that the thing that made it worse was my screaming and my DS arms flailing as he tried to get up again! It broke the ice, she couldn't stop laughing, thank god.

Have any of you had things like this when you were told to be on best behaviour?

My parents drove hours to meet my future pils. They came to my pil’s house for dinner. About halfway through, my fil got up very suddenly, muttered something about cigarettes and left. He didn’t return. I think he was having a mini breakdown. An interesting first meeting.

How is it now with your FIL did he ever explain?

This bit puzzles me too, I think they arrived when I was curled up having a nap on the sofa and sort of coming too. It was nearly 8 years ago, I cant remember and it in itself seems a bit lazy of me! I did say we are all a bit odd

It wasn't quite the first meeting but near the start of our relationship, DH and I went to stay with PILs in their tiny holiday cottage. I'd met them once or twice but never stayed with them. DH (not DH at the time!) we're sleeping in a room with two single beds, one that you pull out from the other one. In the middle of the first night, the bed I was sleeping in completely shattered beneath me with a huge crash. I'm sure they must have thought we were doing something dodgy to break the bed but we weren't at all!

😂😂 - I would definitely have thought shenanigans were afoot :)

This reminds me of a time I went to view a house, the current tenant opened the door topless then went and plonked himself back on the sofa lying with his huge gut hanging off the side while we took ourselves off for a look around 😂 he stayed there the whole time and we let ourselves out!

When my db met his MIL for the first time they sat in the lounge having tea and a chat. His MIL went out to get more biscuits from the kitchen (which must have been an excuse!) and as soon as she left the lounge they could just hear her farting all the way to the kitchen. DB say he nearly wet himself laughing. He and his girlfriend managed to compose themselves by the time the MIL came back. It was never mentioned (except to our side of the family). His MIL is lovely, she is also very prim and proper and I think would have been mortified if she knew he'd heard her.

My now DW is from a former Soviet country (not Russia and she's not Russian). It's the done thing there to meet the family and ask her father for permission to marry. So, I went round and her brother told me not to ask too soon.

We were having dinner and there were a couple of toasts with vodka, then her dad (no English at all) made a speech and a toast, whereupon, the rest of the family collapsed in laughter. It turned out that he thought I'd asked and said yes.

The joke is that she's the last sister to marry and that her dad palmed her off on the first male visitor he could!

Nope, he was always ‘eccentric’, my DH later time he’d had a breakdown when he was a teenager. Generally an odd bloke.

The first time my father met my DP it was to come over and fix my broken bed. It hadnt been broken doing the deed but rather when I had run into the room to join my DP on the bed and jumped up onto the bed and broken it. My DP was in his boxer shorts when my father arrived and the smirk on his face when he surveyed the bed said exactly what he thought had happened. So embarrassing
