How much time do you spend at the kitchen sink?

I'm just musing on my long-term plans for new kitchen and was wondering if it's really worth giving prime kitchen position to the kitchen sink these days!

I've always understood that you should have the kitchen sink looking out on a nice view (if you can), as you spend so much time looking out of it. But as I was washing up yesterday I realised I don't spend a lot of time at the kitchen sink (dishwasher) and maybe I would be better off having clear counter space in the prime area with natural light and a view of the garden.

I know in an ideal world you'd have both, but our kitchen is in the middle of an extended house, and is quite dark, so only a small part of it has natural light, and a view outside.

So, how much time do you spend at your kitchen sink, and what would you do in my situation?

Ooooh, what an exciting idea! We spend more time in the darker counter top area than we do at the sink. We have a dishwasher. You may be breaking ground for kitchen redesigns of the future here!

Ha ha! This is where the revolution begins!

It just struck my yesterday after months of assuming we'd keep the sink in the same place. It would mean moving everything up (dishwasher / pipes / plumbing), but I think it may be worth it... DH, of course, isn't convinced!

😆 I'm sure I've seen grand designs episodes where the sink is in an island, google might have pics to show him?

We spend very little time at the sink and when you are there you are looking down at what you are washing up anyway. If possible I would prioritise a place you sit at for natural views / daylight, failing that the counter where you stand for longest.

Kitchen sink used everyday as we don’t have a dishwasher. Both my daughters have them but still use the sink for items that won’t fit in

Very little time at the sink. Filling kettle and washing the odd thing that can't go in dishwasher. And when I am using it I'm just really quickly doing something so not appreciating any views. Much more time at counters prepping food or sitting on stools at kitchen island or at the table!

I spend very little time there, much more time at a hob cooking, that's why that's the viewpoint I'm considering more than view from the sink.

This is really helpful. It's so good to challenge the assumptions, as things change over time. I actually spend a fair bit of time at the kitchen sink washing up (4 children), but I spend even more time prepping food, so think I should prioritise that.

Also, the sink area always attracts clutter, so I think I'd prefer that hidden away in the depths of the kitchen, rather than poking out where everyone can see it.

5 mins, just to fill up the water filter

Our kitchen sink faces a wall, the worktop where we do food prep faces the window. Much nicer!

OrangePomander · 31/12/2022 16:01

Ours is next to the window as that is where the water inlet and drain are located. So we have sink, washing machine and dishwasher space. But I like your idea and I’m sure plumbing can be moved if needed.

ChristmasTidyings · 31/12/2022 16:04

Ooo interesting! We didn't have a choice as we couldn't afford to move pipes etc. Whats the rest of your lighting like? I have a bit of counter that is practically in the dark in the evenings. And my hot plate isn't lit. That's annoying. Although you also need decent light to do the awkward washing up properly.

Lucky here as my kitchen has two windows both overlooking the back garden and dont spend much time at the sink dont have a dishwasher so maybe ten minutes washing up and the odd few seconds filling the kettle or rinsing veggies etc
